I see all the red songtheaws has 30 baht written on the side now. Does that mean they got a 50% increase?

Last time I went on a share songtheaw it was 20 baht.

If so, C M just got ripped off bigly. Pattaya is still 10 baht on the fixed route.

Never use the Red, If I drop a car off for service I'll take a Yellow down 108 & lately it's been 10B - used to be 7B....

Red overlaps part of that area - would it be 30B for the same run?

I love these kind of statements. The wife's cousin dropped her car off to be serviced this morning and took a songtaew over. First thing she said when she got here was "songtaew fares have gone up to 30 Baht".

No, they changed the fare under law earlier this year to 30 - it's not a Co-op fare, it's determined by the Dept. of Land Transport. That said, there's still confusion, I paid one 30 baht and he gave me 10 baht back in the last month.

Red Songreaws don't work on fixed routes in CM, the other colored ones work on fixed routes. The red ones sort of work likes taxis in that they'll drop you off where you are going as long as they're heading in that general direction, and even then rarely at the door vs say at a landmark/ point near where you are going.

Yellow works on a fixed route, red doesn't.

I caught on on my way back to pick up my car the other week. Sat next to the driver, and was chatting most of the way. I just gave him 20 baht and he said thank you. Thais only pay 20 baht and that's what I pay. Not sure why they have 30 baht printed on the side; possibly just for tourists.

you really can't compare it to Pattaya - they ride around full for 10B which is much better than empty for 20 or 30 baht.. I always feel bad for most of these drivers. More often than not, even on longer trips, I am the only customer... I make sure to give a good tip.

not everyone is out to rip you off - most of these guys are just trying to feed a small family.

Nonsense...........  tyhe official rate it 30B, for everyone.  And Thai PAY 30B too.  VERY short hops can be 20B if the driver agrees.  Otherwise 30.  No difference for farang of Thai, tourist or long-stayer.

My Thai wife says it's actually, in practice, a three tier price schedule; 40 baht for tourists, 30 baht for Thais and 20 baht for Thais who speak the northern dialect. I haven't taken one for a long time so I don't know.

I agree, I used to drop my truck at the A.C.T. in front of the Makro on the super highway, walk across the street and the driver just nodded when I said I wanted to go to KSK, which was tacit agreement for 20 baht, I always paid 40 baht, fair is fair.

That must have been a long time ago. Now, Makro to KSK? I think perhaps 200 Baht?

Yellow charged me 10 yesterday...Home Pro to CM Gate, It goes up, from outside the ring road.  I was expecting to pay 15.

Red charged me 20 to go from CMU to CM Gate, but a guy refused twenty to go from the bottom of Suthep rd. To the back entrance of CMU.  Just tell them 20 before if that is all you want to pay...why risk an argument?

Your comment made me think, you're right, it was about 4 years ago I bought the new truck. Time flies when you're old.

We use Songtheaws several times a week, every week. My wife uses one almost every day. We've never paid 30 baht. The fare has always been 20 baht inside the Superhighway. If you are paying 30 baht, the drives must be fighting for your business!

Yes, FG doesn't like paying the listed price on anything.  Like the time I saw him arguing about the 10B price of a bottle of water....

You've never seen me, never met me, nor know anything about me.

I'm the guy who never even counts his change.

Why do you post such fabrications?  What are you lacking that you have to make up stories about people?

The other day I was lazy to ride my mc to KSK (w/gf and it was hot), took a Grab for 52 baht.  AC, comfy and door to door.  I'm done with red trucks and sitting squashed up in the back of a dangerous pickup like a migrant worker, sweating and breathing exhaust.

Nope.

You didn't actually read the Thai, right..  It merely states that the MAXIMUM fare is 30 Baht per person.

(Clearly the number of people travelling also has an impact.. a single person on a long trip could end up paying 30, but a group of 4 for a fairly standard trip in town.. no way that's 120 Baht total. ;) )

I get out and hand them a 20 baht bill.  No problems yet.  But I seldom take songtaws anymore.  I've also stopped buying services and products that have suddenly jumped by 50%.  The gal who use to cut my hair raised her prices by 50% - she's no longer in business.  And then coffee -- Why pay for a 80 THB latte when you can buy a 25 THB latte at a half a dozen competing shops.  It's a buyers market!  Farang tourist trade is slow.  If the merchants can't accomodate, don't buy.

Gotta remember to say 'sow baht' instead of "yee sip baht" with a krap kun 'jaow.'

Baht buses are not always full. Sometimes a couple people, sometimes none. One evening I was the only passenger, then a Chinese tour guide stopped the driver to get him to take his tour to their hotel. The first Chinese in (a middle aged woman) shoved me to the side of the bench .

Since baht buses have a fixed route sounds like you are comparing dissimilar services. Would compare better to yellow/

They all have small families?  Thanks for letting us know.

Incorrect. For every baht bus full, there are probably 5 empty or with one person.

If they want to make more money, they should reduce the number of red buses. Like Pattaya far too many.

They should also have fixed routes like Pattaya.

Because they are such a rip off, I'll walk before I use them, unless too far.

Thanks for all the replies, but I fail to see why they deserve a 50% hike when Pattaya baht buses have been 10 baht since the 90s, and still are.

Clearly a waste of paint. If I want to go to Arcade I have no hope of paying less than 50.

In English though, it says 30 Baht per person

There has never been a Maximum fare and there isnt one now

There did used to be a minimum fare of 20 Baht, which wasnt written on the side

It could well be that the "maximum" written in Thai , actually means "standard rate"

Sorry. I did not mean to imply they are all always full [you knew that, right?] but I will bet that they average far more customers at 10 baht... and make more money... Fixed routes would be helpful but so often they are empty that a chance to go off route should not be wasted. But really, "such a rip off" - that hardly seems valid for any motorized service that costs only 20 baht... try Phuket for a rip off...
