Kalasin officials on alert over fear Chi River will burst its banks

By The Nation

KALASIN: -- The governor of Kalasin has instructed government agencies in the province to be on alert around the clock for the possibly of the Chi River bursting its banks after more floodwater was released from Lam Pao dam.

On Monday, Suwit Khamdee held a meeting with five district chiefs, tambon chiefs, village heads and representatives of the Army bases in the province and the provincial irrigation office as well as other government agencies.

Bulldozers and 20 large water pumps would be used to help riverside communities if the river bursts its banks.

The governor was told there are 32 spots where the river may burst its banks or break flood levees.

So far, 3,828 rai (612 hectares) of farmland in the province has been flooded, affecting eight villages.

Officials at the meeting agreed to install six water-propellent machines along the river, at spots between Kalasin’s Rong Kham district and Roi Et’s Chiang Kwan district, to speed up the river’s water flow.
