The expiration date of the visa with which you entered Thailand has no effect on the validity period of your work permit, which remains valid until its expiration or the termination of your employment, whichever comes earlier.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. — George Bernard Shaw

As stated, there are two almost completely separate issues

  • The work permit which allows you to legally work according to the conditions specified in the work permit
  • Permission to be in Thailand. A Non B visa issued at a consulate outside Thailand is the most common mechanism used to get an initial 90-day permission to stay. When that expires, you commonly want to apply for an extension of your permission to stay based on employment. There is a minimum salary (which varies based on nationality) to qualify for an extension of stay based on employment. As an alternative, you can use your work permit at some consulates to get further Non B visas. These only allow 90-day visits to Thailand, with border hops needed in between.
