Hotel with unusual design isn’t falling down: experts

The unusual shape of a new hotel being built in Bangkok has caused panic among some city residents after rumours spread on social media that it is collapsing.

Lumpini Police Station’s superintendent Pol Lt-Colonel Duangchot Suwancharas said on Tuesday that he had received complaints about the building and dispatched his subordinates to check.

“We have found out that the rumours are not true. It’s just that this building is designed differently from others,” Duangchot said.

The building in question, in Bangkok’s Ploenchit area, will have 32 floors once construction is complete next year.

Dr Assawin Wanichkorkul, the technical director of the Rosewood Bangkok Hotel project, said he rushed to the construction site as soon as he heard about the rumours on social media.

“But the building has not subsided; neither is it collapsing. The rumours are groundless. There is not debris falling from the structure,” he said.

He explained that the building was designed to have a “3D feel”, with slanting parts “inspired by palms pressing together”.

Some construction workers heard the rumours from social media on Monday morning and initially refused to go to the work site. However, after receiving an explanation, they went back to work as usual.

That's an improvement over the "lobot" and "elephun" inspiration.

I cannot think of a building in Bkk that I feel has beautiful design, creates remarkable space, and lifts the spirit as architecture can do.

this hotel looks to be more of the same.

the one area where Thai design excels are malls designed like Las Vegas casinos - enter anywhere and immediately be stripped of any orientation, sense of direction, and clear access and egress

Can you show examples of this kind of uplifting architecture from elsewhere?

don't come to Australia most of ours are built in the city of melbourne ' look like government housing commision highrise buildings , all hall ways internally are fire rated plasterboard and all units divided by same product plasterboard , cheaply built , expensive to buy ! not builders problem , Architecturally terrible , Developer dream they make the most profit with no overhead on building maintenance , all upon the builder approx 7 years .,

How could anyone dare to distrust a cop and hobby architect and spare time static expert at the hub of collapsing constructions?

Same initial reaction as that towards the Sydney Opera House !

LOL, so true. Oh well, I guess architects are doing their jobs, while the conservative, grumpy old nag-bags do theirs.

The world is thus made...

Personnally I'm impressed with the number of beautiful, daring and exciting buildings that keep popping up in the Bangkok skyline. Not so long ago, as another poster pointed out, the ultimate audacity was limited to elephant or robot shaped buildings, which admittedly were rather pathetic.

Not so nowadays, and the Mahanakhon building (2016) is just one of the most beautiful illustrations.

I have had that alarming experience as well.

In one mall in Singapore I had almost resigned myself to living in one of the large malls permanently.

Ignorance ⇒ Fear ⇒ Rumours ⇒ more Fear

The planned end-result looks pretty nice to me. There are plenty of interesting and even attractive high-rise buildings in BKK. Much nicer to look at than the (yawn) oblong boxes of 40 or 50 years ago. Post-modernism at least makes you take a second look.

You mean all of the exceptionally attractive traditional buildings are all <deleted>? Well, what have we been thinking?

Do you also mean that no building in Bangkok meets your approval AND you are the fount of all architectural taste and wisdom?

How very true; one place that always gets me wondering "which way" in there,

is Robinsons in SriRacha. Fortunately when it had the fire last year I was outside; people screaming out of the place for quite awhile. At least I got my car out after about an hour.

Soon you will get 5 years for farting in thailand

But as an Heir to the Red Bull fortune he will finish up with no time after killing a BiB and get a "Wah" for delivering brown envelopes.

The justice system in this country REMAINS nothing but a joke!

Would this guy have the cohones to claim a similar sentence for those who proclaimed there will be no floods during this monsoon season?
