What caues so many ExPats to totally embelish (brag) about their past?

Some times  I'm nearly stunned by the B.S. guys tell me about their past and accomplishments.

I've heard a lot but I'm sure not all.     In Issan at an immigration office I met a fellow who told me the was a hired  CIA assassin  and he seemed to believe that.   This fellow also told me he was a multi-millionaire at the age of 20.    I asked him how he did it and  he  said he just picked companies off the newspaper listings

But sadly for him he was totally broke.   He could not repeat that incredible ability.      He was happy to  continue on  with his false accomplishments.

Another guy in  Issan told me he was a former London  COP.   and retired and eventually  went from owning a tug boat to  owning  a fleet of Oil Tankers.

A guy approached me yesterday  at a  vendor mall and  instantly gave me a history of his  "accomplishments".      He told me he owned a several thousand person company  and had a wife from his home  country.    He especially added he did not like Thai women.

He failed to grasp my sarcasm when I  told him he came to the perfect country to  avoid  avoid Thai women..

Nevertheless this  Thailand  specialist  proved to be perfect.    He told me he's been a resident of Thailand  for 30 years but has been coming here for 40 years.

He looked (grubby)  like a " falang" on a very limited budget but he apparently enjoyed telling me his B.S.  story.   The country  was..XX

You atract all the good people, try wearing a long sleved shirt and long trousers and dont forget the soxs instead of your to tight shorts and white (ish) vest. ??

PS ive sent you a personal message about my achivements in my life i hope you enjoy the read.

Can't say I've heard any more fibs here than in any schlong length contest back home...

You know, where they metaphorically whip 'em out on the table to see whose is longest.  Come to think of it, I haven't seen one of them since I quit drinking and hanging out in bars.

Leading me to believe that the correlation is the booze.

OP, let me tell you about my accomplishments, sfa, present prospects, sfa, future prospects, death.:cheesy:

Hows that for a load of BS?

I've never felt the need to embellish the truth about my past but, like you, I've heard plenty of people doing it here; I suppose they have a need to be looked up to and want respect for what perhaps they were or nearly were or would have like to have been and back home it won't wash but they feel they have a chance here.  Also, it's sometimes a prelude to seeking a loan or a business partnership where they end up not paying their bit or to the attempted sale of something for more than it's worth.

The same applies, I guess regarding bragging; I've recently read a book by a once major in the British army who I think was actually a major and the book was about his accomplishments but to be fair, he did describe himself as a 'nearly man' even so, there was no purpose to the self-published account of his achievements other than his own desire to record them; nobody cared least of all any publisher; he's dead now, lived with his English wife here in Thailand for the last seven years or so of his life and was known by the girls in the bars as 'short-time Brian'.

Have oft thought about writing my memoirs. Not for publishing but for my kids to read after im gone. Would have loved to read about my old mans exploits something he never gave up to me despite constant asking.

Wheres my pen!

You wont believe this but i have done it , it took quite a long time ,i have had a good life .

I should have thought the answer was obvious......to make themselves appear interesting.

No, they do it because it can not be checked, nor would anyone in their right mind want to check...  AND they love to hear themselves talk...

I seem to attract them when I go for a drink in a bar in Bangkok or Pattaya. There always seems to be someone at the bar who can tell me how great he is, what an achiever and how much money he has.

I wonder if they go home and tell themselves they've convinced one or more how wonderful they are.

if you don't have a life, you make one up and tell yourself the people you are talking at are listening.
Sad story.

Those who brag & boast about everything have owned & achieved nothing.

Need to lie about themselves because thier jealously of others, nothing more.

I have met a few.

I just like to nod and say "wow" a lot to see how far they go.

Some have no limits.

Having low self esteem, they are trying to look good in your eyes as they obviously feel "lower" than you...

Strange that in all my time here i never meet these type of people. Perhaps because of my BS detector facial expressions. But then again, it takes 1 to know 1 :sorry:

Sadly, I never met a single one. Maybe I'm wearing the wrong t-shirt.

It also seems that emails from Nigeria have stopped... Now I wonder if that's related.

I'm probably in a niche of my own...

It is not only about the past. Loads of guys on Thai Visa love to tell us how they have never needed to pay for sex and how they have found the perfect Thai partner who of course loves them for who they are. The same applies, most of it is probably bullshit and why do they need to tell us??  Is anyone remotely interested about the successful? relationship of an anonymous person?

Patttaya, in particular, is a magnet for the former 'top boys' of notorious London football hooligan firms - every other bloke you meet used to run with the ICF or headhunters. There's also a fair percentage of retired SAS (Super Army Soldiers) living in Patts.

And most of the people that you are describing never ask a single question about you. It's always about them.

I think it is done out of fear ... of being insignificant, worthless and meaningless , of being and dying alone , a stranger in a strange land . . .

I have never met so many "snipers" as I have when I spent my time in Thailand, lol!

True story, at least 3. Two were English teachers.

They do it for the same reason so many inflate so many trivial things in an effort to put down all Thais. They can only feel good about themselves if they put down those who they don't have to confront face to face and they create fairy-tales about themselves to tell people who don't know them well.

Reality isn't their friend, so they create a make-believe world in which they are a big deal and and no one else is (or they buy a bunch of guns and mow down random people to demonstrate how powerful they really are).

I believe there are an astounding number of ex or current covert spies (CIA, MI6 and various military )staying here who feel surprising willing to blow their cover for the price of a beer.

The saddest thing a man can stoop to is to actually believe his own bullshit.

I think some people do almost start to beleve their own lies and then there is no point in arguing with them

I used to get up at half-past ten, half an hour before I went to bed..............

I started to write my life story about 4 years ago and stored it all on my hard drive. Sadly the HDD crashed a year ago and I lost the bit from 1960 to 1971 and I never restarted it again.

I lost a lot of the photos too.

Because Thailand attracts a lot of losers who can't make it  at home. Many unskilled, ignorant, low class vagrants that are here to bone local chicks from the sticks.
