A 50 year old drone owner in Nakorn Sawan faces jail after flying his device overhead at a flower giving ceremony at a replica of the Royal Funeral pyre.

The drone was seen flying at around 6.40pm on Thursday in the area given over to the ceremony out front of the Nakorn Sawan town hall.

Kraiwut Tantiwut, from Nakorn Sawan, said he had just bought the drone and claimed he did not know it would be illegal to fly it in that location.

He has been charged with ordinances related to aviation and radio communications that could see him jailed for five years and/or fined up to 100,000 baht.

Police are in the process of evidence gathering.

The suspect was released on 70,000 baht bail.

The authorities are afraid of anything they cannot control themselves

I will not be surprised if soon an "official" drone video is offered for sale from some source, maybe not this fellow's.  Drone cameras typically stream the video so I bet the video files exist somewhere.

There were drones that had official permission. I would guess belonging to the Thai media.

AFAIK, the whole cremation event, both in Bangkok and the provincial replica's came with a whole slew of announced prohibitions with regard to picture taking and sharing pretty much anything pictorial of the events via social media.

Drones purchased in Thailand do not (at the moment) require any registration and sellers and owners do not (at the moment) require licensing. This will change.

Bringing any sort of drone in from overseas either in your baggage or through an online purchase is already prohibited.

Not really. It has been on the TV, in the papers, on social media for several weeks that NO drones would be permitted within a 19km radius of the ceremony. It has been said on those same sources that ALL drones must be registered.

If you believe what Kraiwut Tantiwut says then you must be as dumb as him.

Laws are being enacted world wide to control the spread of drones.

There have been many near misses between drones and aircraft.

There was a collision between a drone and a commercial aircraft in Canada on 16th October.

How long before a drone is fitted with an explosive device to destroy a plane in the air.

Drones have also been used to drop illegal substances into prisons.

They can be of great use WHEN properly licensed and controlled but the average drone user doesn't have much of a clue how to use it.

Yes they do.

The Minister of Transportation enacted a new Notification of the Ministry of Transportation Re Rules to Apply for License and Conditions to Control and Launch the Unmanned Airborne Vehicles, Type Outside Controlled Airborne Vehicles  B.E. 2558 (A.D. 2015) ("Notification"), which was announced in the Government Gazette on 27 August 2015 and became effective on 28 August 2015. The Notification provides that an individual launching a UAV without first obtaining the appropriate license is subject to imprisonment for a term up to one year and/or a fine up to THB 40,000 (approx. USD 1,100) pursuant to the Air Navigation Act B.E. 2497 (A.D. 1954).

Currently in thailand, any drone with a camera regardless of where it was bought, require registration with the NBTC as a radio transmitting device (free and relatively easy) and also permission to fly from CAAT (not so easy - requires insurance and can take 60+ days)

same applies to tourists

Let it be a warning....ngahh..

Why the restriction?  Airports and government buildings, outside people's windows, private property etc, I can all understand.  But why can he not fly his drone here?  Especially if media can fly theirs at the same place as another user posted.

Because the media have permission and probably a licence.

No licence - No fly!

The 'moaners' should look at the laws in the UK.  Registration of any drone 250 grams or more and to pass a competency test.  Even with a licence there are strict rules on where you can fly and what distances you need to keep between the drone and people, traffic, buildings etc.  I'd say in comparison, the laws here are more lax.

The professional videos look nice but seems like somewhat of a queer hobby. Like those those geezers used

to see on beaches with metal detectors. Friendless and lonely freaks.

Now they fly drones around peeping at people. A colleaque of mine just chased off some "perverted dwarf", as he put it. Spying on his wife and kid at a beach on Cebu.
