The Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) commissioner has appointed  two committees to look into the alleged extortion of a Canadian tourist by a traffic police officer at Lumpini police station.

The order by the commissioner Pol Lt Gen Charnthep Sesavej advised the first or disciplinary committee to consider severest punitive action against the accused traffic police officer Snr Sgt Maj Cherdchai Phuchuaytuam for allegedly trying to extort a 25-year-old Canadian tourist by placing drugs in his possession.

The second committee is a fact finding committee tasked to find out whether Snr Sgt Maj Cherdchai’s supervisors, ranging from deputy inspector to superintendent, should be held responsible for failing to prevent the alleged extortion practice.

Freon the news report....

"Sources at Lumpini police station told Thai PBS reporters that the accused officer, who has now been sacked pending the investigation, had been known well by his colleagues of his misbehaviour.

He has been removed from drug investigation duty to traffic instead following several complaints."

One wonders why his colleagues didn't do something if he was known to be a bad cop but I guess the answer to that is blazingly obvious.

Just how many senior cops are currently not sidelined or moved to inactive posts or or under investigation.

The next move should be to dismiss the entire 4 or 5 levels of all the cops and replace them with trusted and capable military guys, whilst a massive reform is undertaken with three of the major items being:

- A totally different model or recruitment, with all actual recruitment subject to a civilian audit body before appointment. And 10 years mandatory jail for any interference, plus instant dismissal for  cops or gov't officers, and for any civilians.

- Promotion by proven higher knowledge and capability and well documented superior / outstanding past performance with all promotions recruitment subject to a civilian audit body before appointment. And 10 years mandatory jail for any interference, plus instant dismissal for  cops or gov't officers, and for any civilians.

- Salaries which are commensurate the responsibilities of the job and high enough to attract good talent.

Further, if his colleagues knew of his misbehavior then surely his boss did also, again why no action.

On the other hand if his boss didn't know how come nobody told the boss, and how come the boss doesn't have some form of monitoring in place to watch his men?

To be honest, it really is pathetic that there are so many officers of all ranks constantly be investigated and that these stories come so thick and fast that everyone has become numb to it all. Rotten to the core.

They need 2 committees? Umm, hate to state the obvious. Bad cop, arrest him and put him in the slammer along with all the other conspirators. Would be the best dam thing this country ever did. Could be the first baby step for Thailand but it will never happen. Transfer the idiot somewhere else where he is a danger to everyone.....

In Chiang Mai it is rare, if at all, that one sees a police officer or two, do a patrol or 'beat'.

However, being the end of the month, I saw 6 or so, stopping motorbikes.  The m/cyclists happened to be tourists and were asked for their licences, which they didn't seem to have.

I suppose in the next day or so,  our ever-ready champions of the law will be back inside the police station, while speeders, lane jumpers, light runners, carry on as before.

What scum !

Can you imagine being stitched up for drug possession in this country and the angst you  and your family would face ?

And his superiors knew  this low life has done it before...

Defies belief.

His boss was probably in the action also

Yep rotten to the core alright But it starts from the top and works its way down Nothing surprises me any more here The cops seem to make the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Mainly corruption. The drug planting was all about money  He traffic cop probably asked for the envelope and when refused changed tactics to get what he wanted. Suspend the guy no pay if proven guilty fire him and press charges Two committees hey? Must be money in committees because Thailand has thousands of them
