It doesn't get used a lot since I bought my Lenovo, but when I tried to turn on the Acer laptop the little blue light appears for a couple of seconds but then disappears and the laptop won't start. I did take it to a local computer repair shop and was quoted 3500 baht, but reduced to 3000 baht when he saw my look of horror. All I could understand was the word motherboard, so does this sound right, me knowing nothing about the laptops innards?

Running on battery or mains power?

Mains, battery no longer holds power for long. The laptop is about 7 years old now, but it's only used for a backup.

I have exactly the same problem with an Acer LT -- I was quoted 3000Bht+ unspecified parts -- I bought a new LT............

I have another computer so didn't want to outlay 15-20000 baht for a new laptop. If I can fix it for 3000 baht so it runs for a few more years, I'll be happy.

If the motherboard is fried.. that is bad. I mean it controls everything. Strange that they can fix it for 3000 ... i mean that they even have a 7 year old motherboard on stock i find a bit suspicious.

Id advise you to go to an other shop too to get a second opinion.

This particular shop (in Pattaya) has been recommended by many on this forum as an honest, fair priced shop to get computers fixed. I have already left the laptop with them so the deal is done.  I'll be interested to see what work they have done on the receipt.

Ok, then maybe i was wrong in my suspicions. Its just rare IMHO that they would have a 7 year old motherboard still in stock.

Sometimes something on the motherboard can work lose.

A number of years ago I had an ASUS laptop which would not start. A repair shop had it for 3 weeks but were unable to fix it.

So, I just took it apart to take a look and put it back together. Surprisingly it worked !!

It turns out that with the on-off heat cycle a screw had worked lose and the motherboard shifted position (worked free a little) - All that was required was to tighten the screw again.

My guess is that the Computer shop were too lazy to fix the Laptop, fortunately nothing was paid.

I recommend this approach - and it is probably what the shop is going to do anyway - and if it didnt work give it back and saay 'no can fix'.

But first - unplug from mains and remove the battery and leave for a day or so. Put battery back in and plug in and try again (sometimes that works).

If not, then look up the Acer model on Youtube and there will probably be a few videos on how to disassemble and re-assemble.  Take your time, and have an area set up to lay each part out as you remove it.  Look for anything broken or loose as a previous poster said - particularly the RAM chips and the hard drive and all the motherboard connections.  I have done this to several laptops and other than on one occasion, they worked again when re-assembled. And if it worksd it will run better as you will also clean out all the crap in heat sink fan etc (of course).

Not worth investing in a 7 year old laptop, you were lucky it worked that long. Things have moved on in 7 years, time for a new one.

Already said I have another newer computer, the laptop is just a back up. Quite honestly don't see what you mean by "moved on", what's so different now in laptops? As long as it can do an internet search it fulfills my needs.

Perhaps you should have asked the question before you handed the laptop over....stating the full model number.

Too late now.

My 10 year old Acer laptop get the same use as yours does. The battery died a few years ago and I didn't bother with a new one.

I can get the internet on it, play games etc and I have certainly had my moneys worth out of it

Sometime it will take 2 or 3 tries to kickstart it, sometimes the lan doesn't come on line. All I do is shut it down and reboot it. I have a couple of other PCs so it is not as though I am desperate.

"Is there a way to fix my laptop before I take it to the shop?", for instance.

I never asked that question, but I already looked online for quick fixes, they didn't work. Why, did you have a solution ? Nah, didn't think so.

I just picked it up, they said they replaced a part of the main board. Did or didn't who's to say, but I now have a spare working laptop for a 3000 baht outlay that may go another 7 years. Everyone wants to throw stuff away, no wonder we are drowning in plastic.

Remind me....what was the point of this thread again? Perhaps you told and I missed it.

Was it simply to ask if it could have been the Motherboard and 3000 baht sounded about right?

In that case, then it would have been more intelligent to ask here, giving full details of the model in question, before you took it to the shop.

That way we would have an idea, after troubleshooting, as to whether it could be the Motherboard and whether 3000 baht sounded about right.

But instead you created an utterly pointless thread, not even bothering to name the model in question. Wow...

Nevertheless, we seem to both be happy that you spent 3000 baht. Have a nice day.

Glad you spared the time to respond to a pointless thread, even though you really contributed nothing.

If you know somebody who's good with electronics, motherboards often have only little mistakes that can be fixed. I found such a guy and would try him before buying  a new motherboard.

Why do people have to be impolite to each other when it's an ordinary question to a problem that we all might have one day?

Why? Back up everything to One Drive or Google Drive, or to a USB drive, you only need one PC.

Sometimes when I can't sleep I use it in the spare bedroom to watch movies. Besides, why throw away a laptop if it can be fixed at a reasonable cost? BTW I have all my backups on a WD hard drive.

Perhaps you only need one PC. BTW, One Drive, or Google Drive is not an option for me to back up a complete drive C with various programs. The only good alternative is to have all backed up on an external drive. ( Preferred using Macrium to restore and backup)
