Trump threatens government shutdown in September if no funding for wall

WASHINGTON, Michigan (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald on Saturday threatened to shut down the federal government in September if Congress did not provide more funding to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

"That wall has started, we have 1.6 billion (dollars)," Trump said at a campaign rally in Washington, Michigan.

"We come up again on September 28th and if we don't get border security we will have no choice, we will close down the country because we need border security."

Trump made a similar threat in March to push for changes in immigration law that he says would prevent criminals from entering the country. The government briefly shut down in January over immigration.

A $1.3 trillion spending bill, which Trump signed last month, will keep the government funded through the end of September. A government shutdown ahead of the November mid-elections is unlikely to be supported by his fellow Republicans who are keen to keep control of the U.S. Congress.

Trump cited the hundreds of Central American migrants traveling in a "caravan" as one of the reasons for strong border security.

"Watch the caravan, watch how sad and terrible it is, including for those people and the crime that they inflict on themselves and that others inflict on them," said Trump.

"It's a horrible dangerous journey for them and they come up because they know once they can get here they can walk right into our country."

Migrants, who include women and children, have said they fled their homes in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras because of death threats from gangs, the murder of family members or political persecution.

Just another one of his bullshit lines. Oh and then there's the "I'll release my tax forms" and let's not forget a/b "hiring the best people" and the classic "drain the swamp." This degenerate is a pathological liar. They should put his picture next to the definition of mental illness.

A flaccid dictator as it were.

Though Tiny Don is a train wreck, and is presiding over the most incompetent and least effective administration in history, there is little need to worry. He is continuing to shoot himself in the foot daily. And he will be rendered virtually powerless in November, when he will suffer a truly humiliating defeat in the house. That, combined with the confessions of Cohen, that Trump paid the hush money out of pocket, during the campaign, and quite possibly criminal charges stemming from collusion with Russia, and who knows what else Mueller will find in that massive closet of skeletons, and he will be able to choose between impeachment, or resignation. He will choose the later. He will be gone within 12 months, if all goes well. Get used to saying President Pence.

Is Donald Trump a secret agent for the democrats. If anything would ensure a massive defeat for the Republicans in the midterms, it would be if Trump actually carried out this threat. Here's hoping he does just that.

The house is toast come November and some say that they could lose the senate too. I think losing the senate is a big call but with a shutdown? Maybe.

The VP is very adept at smiling and nodding.

Other than that.....

To my knowledge, the White House has not submitted any proposal for what type of wall (remember he went across country to view samples) and at what points they will erect the wall. Without this information, how can one event estimate the cost? He is fighting his own party on the budget....

Democrats are hoping that happens, just before the November elections.

And now Trump can't trade DACA extension for wall funding.

They can be made to pay through less money to their government by renewal of treaties that to ones that pay less money to Mexico. He has three more years to do this, thus recourperating some of the money.

"Renewall of Treaties"????? Does the USA have treaties with Mexico that have an expiration date?

Maybe the USA can threaten to cancel this program:

U.S. gathers data on migrants deep in Mexico, a sensitive program Trump’s rhetoric could put at risk

The United States government is expanding a program to capture the biometric data of tens of thousands of Central Americans and other migrants arrested in Mexico, gaining unprecedented access to Mexican immigration jails to identify criminals, gang members and potential terrorists long before they reach the border.

Operating in detention facilities in southern Mexico and here in the capital, Department of Homeland Security officials have installed scores of screening terminals to collect migrants’ fingerprints, ocular scans and other identifying features, including tattoos and scars.

The US isn't financing this program for Mexico's sake, though certainly Mexico benefits free of charge. US funds are being spent for the sake of furthering US security.

Trump would be a fool (not for the first time) to reduce or terminate the program. And Mexico will keep the equipment, data bases and software with no obligation to share its data with the US which it would currently. A two thousand mile long Mexico is America's first line of defense against immigration from Latin America. It makes no sense for the US to weaken Mexico's internal security.

Trump continues in his lunacy, nothing new in that.  Eventually he will be removed, probably by the men in the white coats, but whatever way it is, the sooner the better!

Got any money that you want to put on about his removal ?

Let's see how much weight that argument carries with Trump.

Trump is full of BS and as usual playing to his 'fan club' who know nothing about  how government works or the realities of running a competent administration with competent managers.

If Trump ever shut down the government over a useless border wall- the Republicans and Democrats would have a feast over his carcass.  The Repubs know that they have an uphill battle on retaining house seats and this would cause a larger loss.  Once the Democrats get control of the House , impeachment becomes more possible- because the House is where it starts and Impeachment can proceed with a simple majority.
