Another shark attack in Hua Hin: Korean man was swimming despite warning signs

Another tourist has been bitten by a shark in the same Hua Hin area where a Norwegian was attacked two weeks ago.

This time the victim was a South Korean tourist believed to be staying in a condo in the Khao Tao area.

They did not apparently seek hospital treatment.

The tourist is believed to have been swimming off the Sai Noi beach by the temple of Wat Tham Khao Tao despite warning signs forbidding swimming.

The attack was confirmed by deputy governor of Prajuab Khiri Khan province Pongpan Vichiensamut, though it was not thought to be serious.

Buoys have been put in place but there is as yet no net preventing sharks. The authorities did not want fish to be harmed.

Ban Muang reported that a fisherman had landed a 40-50 kilogram bull shark in the area. The authorities are about to ban fishing too.

Bull sharks can be sold for 2,000 baht each.

Meanwhile following reports that shark bite victim Norwegian Werner Danielsen, 54, was not insured, came news that local tourism chiefs have contacted the head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand to see if there is a way to help the tourist.

He is facing 300,000 baht bills at Bangkok Hospital in Hua Hin and further expenses for follow up procedures and physiotherapy in a hospital in Khon Kaen.

His Thai wife  earlier slammed the authorities for their lack of action in helping her husband.

Signs don't include Korean or Russian warnings. I suggest taking some of the inactive cops and plop their  backsides down along the beach to keep an eye on things. Give incentive by allowing cops to pop off a few rounds if they see a shark.

Im happy that sharks are doing well but it must be really bad news for Huahin tourism. And for swimming on a beach with shark signs, well no comments

All a bit odd- even if got a small laceration from the shark-surely  it would be a good idea for antibiotics / dressing?

Ah problem solved - he was after a nice bunch of flowers and that mysterious special travel card.

this is example of  normal appropriate sign

So, you mean that a normal intelligent person that sees a sign that reads "Varning! Please do not swin." just chooses to disregard that? Or is it only you that are in the big need of specially designed signs to understand that there is a reason for the varning?

The beach is some way from Hua Hin so doesn't affect Hua Hin per se.  Khao Tao on the other hand has never had so many visitors.  All hoping to see sharks!

2018 Shark Attack statistics for Thailand
1 confirmed, 1 unconfirmed injuries by shark attack.

2018 Traffic injury/death statistics for Thailand

Over 1/4 of a million

Do the math!  No doubt there should be a "Please Do Not Drive" sign posted on all Thai roads.

"... The authorities did not want fish to be harmed.. The authorities are about to ban fishing too." That's really, really good if the auhorities can follow that with some affirmitive action.

fear in understanding has been known to have excellent motivational qualities.

many beaches have "no swimming" signs but people may think the reason is "strong currents" or waves and choose to ignore them and go in anyway because they may have experience dealing with these things. it is called making an "informed decision" . as someone surfing since childhood and living in hawaii for many years i (and numerous others) have come to understand why beach signs give the reason for danger.

in phuket theres often no swimming signs that can be ignored by people surfing with some ocean knowledge-experience.  if the sign was because of a shark or box jellyfish i would not go in.

your inference suggested people not benefitting from such specific warning signs are below normal intelligence but dont worry, your ignorance does not bother me.

I don't see them problem with swimming there...

Shark attacks every year in Oz, doesn't stop people swimming/surfing/diving !!

Problem is A shark might bite you

Seems a good enough reason to avoid swimming in my book!!

Read a comment somewhere recently about skiing vs. water sports.

If people were told there were unseen monsters with big teeth lurking underneath the snow, and one might, at any time, bite them or possibly drag them down under the snow, possibly never to be seen again, how many would go skiing?
