So I ordered a laptop over 40000 baht from Amazon..

Featured Replies

I decided to go for it and order a laptop for about 1700 USD on Amazon and paid the deposit to them as well for tax and whatnot..

The day it came to Suvarnabhumi, DHL messages me that thai customs law require import license for product over 40000 thai baht..

I was told this "You can come to suvarnabhumi airport for registration import license with thai customs by provide original passport for yourself. (Free of charge)."

Have anyone faced anything like this? What does it mean for me to give them my passport and register for import license?

Appreciate any input about this!

Free of charge? In Thailand? I would not bet on that.

  • Sounds like they want you to give them your passport , so that you can register for an import licence

Just a general question: Why didn't you buy it in Thailand? You must need something very special if it's not available here. And I think it's so much easier if you have warranty issues etc.

Probably nothing to worry about, maybe they will ask you to pay a fee and you have to sign a document it's for private use. They will assist you at the airport.

Agree with that

I once went to the Customs Depo at the airport & the first thing I had to do was pay the hoarders around the entrance a 1000 bht for handling the paper work & to get item.

Then I went inside & to deal with duty costs & between me & Customs officer I not know who was peed of the most (my wife told me Customs were )

Its a Razer Laptop which they don't sell in Thailand, atleast not the latest one.

Thanks for the input.. I will report back if I had to do any shady dealings..

My son bought a Razer phone thru amazon which was faulty, they offered to take it back and refund my money, not postage and import duties. They would then sell me another if I paid all the postage and duties again.

I wrote a bad review on Amazon which was not posted because you are only allowed to comment on the item, not Amazon’s poor service. That is done through Amazon and not for public viewing, except on other social media sites which I have been doing. After many emails back and forth I refuse to buy anything from amazon. We eventually sourced one through Thailand.

I can’t remember the slogan printed on every amazon email something about listening to the customer. At one stage in the emails they replied about the Razer phone;

If you do not wish to return the shoes to us, I'd recommend consulting your owner's manual and/or contacting the manufacturer to see if the problem in question is covered by the manufacturer's warranty.”

Great company and great support?

I ordered a surface PRO 4 I7 with all, pen, keyboard and ARC Mouse close to 100.000 Baht, from Amazon, DHL did all the import license work for me, I got my import fee deposit back two days ago 300 US back. I paid DHL 1800 Baht for doing the License it was no problem, but I had to mail the DHL head office.

Thanks leeroll

Looking forward to a further report, I've thought about ordering from Amazon myself.

You need to do Thailand Customs "Paperless Registration".

I don't want to post links to another site, but the information is out there if you search for it.

I did it at the Customs Building in Klongtoey, and yes... it is free, with the exception of having to pay a few baht for tax stamps.

IMO, poor selection, much more expensive, and a Thai keyboard.

The big question is did you buy from amazon directly or a 3rd party?

Amazon will definitely refund you everything including all the fees if you reject the package. Their export program  guarantees that you won't face any additional charges whatsoever.

It doesn't actually need to be that special not to be available here, the computers for sale here are way behind as far as specs go. The other day I went to buy a display port cable and after checking at five computer shops in the local mall I gave up, the laptops for sale here all had hdmi ports which have gone by the wayside for a couple of years back home. I tried to find an LED printer also, and all of the computer shops and printer shops thought I was talking about a printer that had an LED screen and had no idea that there were printers that used LED instead of print heads.

I'm not knocking the people here, they deal with what they know and sell and many of them are very quick to understand, I'm just explaining why the OP didn't buy here. The other plus is that computers sold back home come with genuine software and not pirated, and it's in the price.

The customs will not return the packaged, you have to get it out from the customs before you can return it.

DHL will retrieve it from customs and return it.

I tried that, but the msg was that the custom will not release the order, thats why DHL made the license for me. DHL told me that the custom dont release package without the proper paper, even if it was to be returned.

The tracking will show package not being delivered and op entitled for a full refund. Amazon may or may not contact the courrier to return it.

Be careful with DHL,they tried to rip me off for 17k customs duty for an item that was valued at 2.5 k bht..with the intervention of a high ranking friend, i eventually still had to pay over 4k..even though going by the HS attached, i was only liable to pay 1260 bht.I think DHL does the calculation and tax collection on behalf of the Government!!!!

The attachment below should give you more clarity regarding your situation.

This happened to me as well except I was using the eBay Global Shipping service and the item was only worth 250 USD. Got a similar message from the logistics provider telling me that I needed to go to Suvarnabhumi and register as an importer. I decided that it wasn't worth my time to make the trip and deal with government officials so I wrote it off as a loss. A few days later the item was delivered to me.

Yes Amazons customer service is among the worst you will find

You are asking for problems, charges etc.

Refuse delivery, send back to Amazon.

I did this two years ago, I informed Amazon who told me to decline the item, they refunded my money within 7 days, then DHL came to my house requesting 13,000 Baht duties, I refused the item, they came again a week later reducing the amount to 5,000 I refused again, (especially as Amazon had now refunded me), a further few days later, DHL left (chucked it over the fence) the package in my driveway. I told Amazon who said, keep it, no charge!

Both Amazon and eBay's global shipping  program states "no additional custom fees or taxes"

Apple has the same arrangement. I ordered from Amazon last month and this month as well with no issues. I have ordered from Apple numerous times.. no issues.. The difference is both Amazon and Apple sent my items via UPS.

I'll bet you 1000 Baht it will not end up free whenever DHL are involved in the international shipping chain!

And Razer is so much better than anything else on the market here in Thailand? I doubt that VERY much.
