Bangkok Metropolitan Administration launched a city-wide crackdown on Thursday against motorcycle riding or car parking on sidewalks.

The crackdown was focused on 115 points of sidewalks where there have been numerous complaints against car parking or driving of motorcycles.  City police have been deployed to man all the 115 points, with a table being placed at each of the points to issue tickets to the violators.

Bangkok deputy governor Sakonthee Patthiyakul said that city police could immediately arrest and fine violators on the spot, with the maximum amount of fine as high as 5,000 baht.  But he said violators would be initially fined 500 baht.

Has this article been copied and pasted from a Thaivisa issue from last year, or didn't that crackdown work ?

Good luck with that guys, with millions of cars and motorcycles it's going to be a hard slog, and once those tables will be gone, so will be the threat and everything will be back to same' same'...

But he said violators would be initially fined 500 baht.

So it's another fake thai crackdown, number 834....

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

This crackdown should be nationwide not confined to the BMA.  Illegal parking is worse in smaller centres.

Probably the fourth or fifth or more footpath crackdown that I can remember.....again...a waste of manpower and will as always, achieve zero.

How can it be a waste of manpower ?

These guy either fine people riding bikes on the pavement or people littering, that's what they are paid to do.

Would you rather they sit in their huts watching T.V. ?

Will this month's crackdown run for both days?

" with a table being placed at each of the points to issue tickets to the violators." No need for any BIB. Tables will do the job. Thai ingenuity at it's best.

They would do better to copy the Buriram idea where, in the bus station area, about fifty illegally parked 'bikes were all chained up and not released until each owner went to the police station and requested release. The offence was never repeated.

How about the farangs riding their bicycles down beach road "walkway"? I have almost been hit a dozen times while walking down there. The road is for bicycles.

But I hope someone is seriously monitoring the procurement of the 115 new tables to ensure there's no %.

Been in Thailand since 2001 and they were talking about banning motorbikes from the pavements then too.

They were old motorbikes.  We're talking newer models now. Completely different ball game.

That's exactly what will happen after the 3 day crackdown...……..they'll be overworked and tired.

this newest crackdown should have a shelf life of about 7 days...

WAIT!!

I have a novel idea.  Let's ban motorcycle renting groups from taking up all the bike parking with their 50 bikes for rent.  Imagine all the free parking space that would be available ... for sure in Pattaya, I don't know about anywhere else.

And yes, I know that there is a limit of 5 bikes per motorcycle rental group ... that is why there are 10 different rental groups at the corner. :(

I've said that since the first day I arrived here.  But if you want to talk about an entrenched corrupt business, look no further.  It is not unusual to see a uniformed high ranking policeman in a police truck park in the middle of the street regularly to collect his cut ... always smoking his pipe.

Heard this so many times over 35 years. Never, ever happens.

Almost hit by moto taxi driving on sidewalk and coming from behind. Was on Sukumvit near nana. The passenger looked at me and said sorry; the driver, couldn't have cared less. She looked at me like I was in the way. Guess she was right. Scum.

Crackdown!!! Crack is the operative syllable, and it won't take long for several to appear between intent and action.

They have been stopping and fining people under the Phrom Phong BTS station for the past couple of months.

So it seems you are a tiny bit off.
