CHINESE TOURISM HAS RUINED CHIANGMAI & PAI.  Period.

Ive been living 60/40 (Chiangmai/Australia) for the last 8 years.  I see the trends in distinct terms as you get that more definitive perspective when things dont evolve just before your eyes, but from looking away and then looking back after some time.

Prior to 2014 there was no noticable Chinese tourism here in CM, then I came back for Songkran in 2014 (April) after just 4 months away, and the first comment from the taxi driver taking me from CM airport was that "oh Chinese people here, many, and very loud!";  I then arrived at my usual place of abode, and slap me down and call me ridiculous the elder lady owner said the very same thing.

That was the moment the flood gates opened.. and boy oh boy has the place gone to the dogs, let me summarise:
*  They have no manners; no sense of personal space; spit out the food they dont want to eat on restaurant tables; sneeze and cough in restaurants without any covering of their face; TALK SO DAMNED LOUD IT SOUND LIKE THEY'RE FIGHTING!  (day and night, with no restriction on their behaviour!)
*  stop on foot or on motorcycles in the MIDDLE of traffic intersections to check their phones and maps (giving no warning);
*  will buy for example, paracetamol from the chemist, then try to return it for a refund, part used, a week later before they fly out;
*  overcrowd the small favourit streetside local restaurants (including my 11 year favourite!!) to the point im waiting 30 minutes to order sometimes when prior it was no more than 5 minutes;
*  HAVE DRIVEN UP PRICES SHARPLY!  Room rates up; food up (my favourite restaurant recently went up 30b (from 50 to 80) for the same meal.
* Have caused MANY monthly room rental businesses to convert to nightly, to CASH IN on the Chinese>  Orchid Residence - had GREAT HUGE rooms 5000b/mth (I actually moved out last Feb due to the DAMNED busses of NOISY chinese arriving every night at 11pm and milling around screaming at each other for an hour before they were ushered off into the adjoining nightly rooms), now even their monthly rooms are all re-converted to 1,600bt nightly rooms..
*  Massive DOWNTURN of farangs (westerners) in CM.. some of these people can be idiots at times too but I prefer them every day, frankly i have been starting to avoid CM myself and I have seen they flood of Chinese really impact the pleasantness of the place and affect willingness of farangs to live here and visit>  I have just returned for winter season, then im moving south.. away from the chinese, its that bad ????
*  DISEASES>  sorry but its the truth.. on their arrival all kinds of new flu strains became commonplace around the old city, again look at their personal hygeine..  its disgusting!
*  Quiet places to relax around CM, many are now so damned polluted with the sight of large numbers of chinese and their loudness (eg. the lake at CM University)... try taking a coffee at 9am and enjoying the serenity and peace.. NOPE!!!  they run around, screaming at each other, competing for top photo locations and directing each other around like a General does a rabble of an army... dear GOD!
*  I could go on.. but in summary Chinese business has always had a mild part in CM culture, but this is out of control, and they are buying up property to convert to rip their own off and flood the place, I dont know about a 'downturn'... I dont see much evidence of that at all, more like there has been a massive increase in the businesses catering specifically to them so maybe its being spread too thinly for them all to profit.  Stick your profits UP YOUR <deleted>.. CM Board of Commerce needs to arrest this and restore the old quaintness quick smart.. lest we never return.

All this while falang are getting worldwide attention for defacing historical sites and getting arrested for child porn.

I am falang but your post is so full of hate I think you may be more dangerous then a group of Chinese.

I am not a big fan of Chinese, but I certainly do not let them ruin my life.  How do you survive?  Maybe time to move on.....

Once the rail link from China to bkk is completed Chiang Mai would certainly be a suitable place to drop off for a weekend to split the journey up . A weekend is about perfect to visit and get pretty much everything out of chang Mai you need . One thing I have to add is the prettiest women in Thailand are in northern Thailand ! I like that fair skin ????

My friend it will be a disaster for Thailand when the rail from China to Thailand is up and running......Thailand will be flooded with Chinese.. I will make a small bet the price of rail tickets will be cheap as chips so they can make sure they get as many Chinese into Thailand as possible...

Ah,,bit of semantics but since when did the Thai refer to the Chinese as 'farang' anyway?NEVER-repeat-Never in my experience.

Every Thai knows what a "Frank/feringhi is-and the Chinese don't fit into that category.

The thing that ruined Chiang Mai was/is that everyone and their dog woke up to the fact that it was a polluted hell hole even by Thai standards (very low) mainly thu' reading the internet.

If yours favorite restaurant meal was 50 baht I doubt if you will me missed and the Chinese will be deemed an improvement.

you can only understand the comments by JaideeAussie if you had interacted with Chinese, I lived on China for 12 horrendous years  thus HAD to tolerate  them as it was their country, but tolerate them on another country it's a different story, they don't have any social skills, until they do, it would be better if they travel within their own country, once a little more civilized and aware of the OTHER world (they think there's only THEIR world) maybe they will be some how tolerated, regardless of how much money they have,  not accepted, only tolerated. So you know, if the comments sound some how discriminatory, trust me, the chinese say much worse things about us westerners or falangs as you refer to

Do you think the Thai people should put on white hoods and burn chopsticks on Chinese lawns? Or maybe get Thai newspapers to draw cartoons of Chinese athletes?

It continually amazes me that carrying 20k THB (~$600 USD) in cash is seen as an onerous task and a "ridiculous hurdle".

Can Thai Immigration look at a credit/debit card and know that it is an open working account, the amount of credit available, etc.?

Some of you people need some serious counseling.

Your hate and disdain for Chinese is mind boggling.

You don't like the way they eat?  Then don't watch them.

They are loud?  Then wear headphones and listen to music as you walk around.

They ruin hotels?  Then stay in a better place.

I can go on and on.

The hate is too the point that we might read on TV at some point:  Falang rents truck and runs over 35 Chinese tourists at Nimman….

Come on people.  A little maturity and tolerance can go a long way.  My experience is if they are too loud ask them to quiet down and they will apologize and do so.  And you cannot change their culture but you can change your thinking.

It all seems to be making some of you so angry and ruining some of your lives.

Wow, pretty sad grow up it is mostly your issue sorry.....

I have lived here more 12 years full time, in Chiang Mai.

I can say the Chinese tourists are the worst.  I know it sounds not PC, but unless you have spend a week or so having to interact with them every day you won't have any idea what they are like.

They push and shove into people, hurt people by accident and not bat an eye, so loud and rude, stuffing their faces with food.. food falling out of the mouths as they have not even swallowed their food before shoving more in.

They have no idea about dangers of roads, many time we nearly ran into them, they randomly step out into traffic, cycle or motor bike on the wrong side of the road, step backward and crouch down into the busy traffic to take a phot of something.  Idiots.

I saw one guy having a shower in the supermarket water feature, another washing his feet in the hotel fish pond in reception.

They are so rude, stupid and loud that the Thai staff at hotels and holiday places loose patience with them and just treat them like toddlers, yelling at them and no polite hotel manners.  Problem here is that then farangs come in the staff and standards have dropped so low that we get treated the same.  Used to holiday in Phuket a few times a year and stay in nice hotels.  Now they are full of busses of Chinese, messy, noisy and the staff are all tired and grumpy.

The worst thing I saw concerning them was when we were at a hotel breakfast.  A Chinese family basically stuffed all their plates, shopping bags, water bottles etc, with all the breakfast things, then has a mountain of food on the table, eating with disgusting manners, food all over the floor, shouting like they were having a row, then their teenage daughter actually passed out and collapsed onto the floor, and her family did not even care and kept on eating and talking.  The hotel staff were frantic in panic and trying to help the girl.  It was unbelievable.

When the hotels are full of Chinese tourists then the standard goes way down, its not a pleasant relaxing place, and nothing like the 'Thai experience', and so this discourages farang tourists from returning.

How terrible for you, I hope you recover from the ordeal.

We should form a group of investors to build slop houses close to the train stations ... next year Rodney ! ????

I also have lived in China, I spent two years there in the mid '90's in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhaou and Shenyang - it's just another country, a people with different customs to my that of my home, you can eat, sleep and get around to a decent standard and it's not difficult to interact with the locals who are not aggressive. Those of you that have posted that you've lived there and it was a nightmare, god only knows where you were or what you were doing, either that or you're making it all up to help support your anti-Chinese arguments. TBH I think working in a gipsy run amusement arcade in Bridlington would be a nightmare but I wouldn't expect people to be put off the entire British population as a result!

There is difference between Chinese Tourists coming here on package tours, and the average Chinese person back in China.

Don't think people are saying they don't like ALL Chinese people.  Its only the majority of the kind that come here on holiday.

Its like you could not judge what the average British person was like by seeing the ones that go on the cheap holidays to Benidorm on a Stag party.

Cant understand why some people on this thread insist that anyone that criticises these Chinese tourists is wrong is crazy.  Have they actually spent time with them? Stayed in a hotel which was full of them, or been on public transport with them?  I know many Thai people who have commented to me they are annoying and rude, but they have to put up with them to get their money.

agree, that's correct comment. Some here have hard time accepting other people opinion, freedom of speech and opinion should be accepted in a democratic way, unfortunately too many have hard time with it. I live and worked, my own business, in Guangdong province for 12 years, I know what I am talking about, and again, not all Chinese are the same, like not all English or any other nationality are the same, people make a comment (negative and/or positive) about a race that doesn't mean they are generalizing, it's common expression to refer to different races in the whole concept of a country..

But that will take a long time when you are stuck in a hotel which is 90 percent occupied with the Chinese package tour groups.  But the time I ask them all to quite down my breakfast will be cold.

You are clearly very sensitive, which is a good quality.  But I can't really see much 'disgusting' AND hateful raciest comments here, only people being annoyed and irritated by Chinese package tour groups in Thailand.  It would not matter what nationality they were... but the fact is these problems at the moment are mostly from and average Chinese Tourists.

I suppose you will love everyone and put up with any antisocial, annoying and dangerous behaviour from anybody that is a different race from you, and not say a negative word, in case you hurt their feelings and appear raciest?

Have you ever stayed in a tourist place for any length of time where these Chinese tourists are in the majority?

I don't agree - why should the poster have to adapt his lifestyle to suit the disgusting and bad manners of other tourists or visitors?

Are you a child?

Because it is called life and it is not always going to be the way you want today.

They are here and you have no control over that.

Continuing to complain is not going to make them go away.

Figure it out or let them make you crazy and hateful I don't care.

I can adapt and enjoy a great life here.

So many cannot, how sad for them.....
