A relative cries over the body of Caris Waraklan, who fell to his death Tuesday morning from the Si Rat Expressway.

NONTHABURI — Two furniture deliverymen fell to their deaths Tuesday morning after an elderly motorist crashed his Mercedes-Benz into their stalled vehicle on an elevated highway in northern metro Bangkok.

Woothichai Suracha, 32, and Caris Waraklan, 22, both employees of SB Design Square furniture company, were examining their stalled truck on the Si Rat Expressway at 8:30am near Wat Bua Kwan when 72-year-old Surang Supornsuk struck their vehicle. The pair were reportedly forced to leap over the guardrail and died from the fall.

"Surang rammed into the truck at a high speed, forcing Woothichai and Caris to jump out of the way, Thanathorn said. They fell six meters and died on impact."

This isn't meant to be insensitive, but it seems odd they both died after a six metre fall. Serious as it is, I wouldn't have imagined that distance would be fatal?

Probably only if you dived head first.

.........Thanathorn said. They fell six meters and died on impact. The front driver’s side of Surang’s car was caved in from the impact. Both he and Panunak were taken to Pranangklao Hospital with injuries.

So, Thanathorn, a rescue worker, was taken to hospital? And who is Panunak? The girlfriend of one of the deceased employees was in the cab of the truck a company vehicle?

As usual, more confused reporting.

“I want to ask Surang, why did he have to drive so fast and hit them? How can he say that he didn’t see the truck as an excuse? It’s two-meters tall!” Thida said.

Well summarized, how do you not see an object 2 metres tall? Or shouldnt you be driving at that age if you cannot see  it?  What a revelation  if all over 50 years who have a 5 year licence and on renewal had to re-do the full test driving test and those over 65 years need a authorised eye specilaist report on their sight for renewal of licence. The latter step would catch those with a licence for life.

As usual, more confused reading.

The linked article explains it perfectly clearly, it is you who is confused.  Panunak was Caris' girlfriend and, yes, she was in the cab of the vehicle.

The article also very clearly states that the driver of the car, Surang, and Panunak were taken to hospital.  Nowhere does it say that the rescue worker was taken to hospital.

According to the Bangkok Post, the Benz had a female driver and passenger and the two who died were thrown over the barrier. Which report is correct.

Last week we drove in a hiso neighbourhood, suddenly a Benz with old grandma behind the wheel came from the right at a junction and refused to stop for us...

Guess she didn't see our car at all or she felt sooo hiso that she didn't want to stop for our car.

72 years old. Probably blind as a bat.

Why would you assume that? If that was the case half the drivers in Thailand must be blind as well.

I'm guessing no charges will be pressed against the driver of the Benz as it is an expensive car perhaps indicating the driver has money and influence? I guess given his age he is entitled to speed. Perhaps he was even in the army before retiring with his Benz.

All I can say is that your 'guessing is very 'exquisite and appropriate'

Another incident which cements the world's most dangerous rooads. Benz driver might be trying to undertake using emergency lane and his view blocked by a taller vehicle infront.

We've had several accidents in the past with vehicles hitting people standing on the highway after they had to stop their car/truck. If they had never left their truck they would have been alive today.  They probably did not notice anything before the 72 year old driver hit them .

Bingo. Saved me writing that.

Problem is in the past we had lifetime valid driver's licenses so there was no way to screen drivers (especially elderly ones) for health problems such as poor eyesight, hearing etc.

The good news is lifetime valid driver's licenses are no longer offered but the bad news is most of people over 45 have them and things like this are going to happen again unless we change the rules and require those over 65 to get health checks to confirm their physical and mental capacity to drive.

If the weight of the guys was 60kg each they impacted the ground from a height of 6 meters at 39.04 km/h. That’s more than enough to rupture organs, arteries or to shatter bones. If you land straight on your head, it’s definitely game over!

That's a fair comment.

I must have been lucky. I fell 15 metres onto a stone floor. I got away with a dislocated shoulder and multiple cuts and bruises.

One day, if you are lucky, you might be 72 years old and I hope that you have to put up with disparaging remarks like that.  Nowadays, 72 years old is not that old, with life expectancy being well into the eighties for those who have already made it well into the seventies.  Most drivers who run into other vehicles at speed are in fact younger people like yourself, when we oldies might well say "Drunk as a skunk" were we to be as condescending as yourself.

Wow, yes you were indeed lucky, but I suggest you do not try it again,
