Is it racist to dislike/hate accents?

But if you dislike the accent, will you not dislike the person speaking?

An Englishman disliking a German speaking English would not be "racist" if they disliked the accent,  because they are of the same race.

They would just be rather an unpleasant, curmudgeonly, xenophobe.

With nothing better to do with their miserable old lives than brag about it on TVF.

It's pretty much how it is as we are world citizens - strangers in a strange land, so to speak....I've had some interesting conversations with folks with accents.....

Where it really hurts here is with the heavy concentration of Philippine teachers in schools attempting to teach in English.....

It's difficult to enough to understand their unusual English in the Philippines; let alone trying to keep 25-30 already struggling kids trying to make sense of their clipped & not always proper English....

Apparently, from some of the replies, some here have a low tolerance attempting to chat with someone who might be speaking English as their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th language (and looking down at them because of it), more's the pity....

Because some people confuse accent with being fluent.

as i mentioned in my opening, Indians speak fluent English but accent can be annoying , Russian can speak fluent English but it may sound aggressive

someone may not speak fluent English but will have no unpleasant accent

Or speaks fluent English while people who don't are easier to understand. I heard one English accent I thought the guy was drunk it really was hard to understand. I find the Americans far more civilized in their accent. I can't say I have heard all US accents but this one English accent will be engraved in my mind forever.

Having said that there are some Dutch accents too that are almost impossible to understand. In my area some of the older farmers, it was almost a language on its own.

Hmmm....I can understand not liking someone because of their personality and being even more annoyed with their accent on top of that.  But to not like someone just purely because of their accent?  Not sure if I would classify that as racist, but certainly intolerant, bigoted, that sort of thing.

If you do not like ice cream you would not go into ice cream shop.

if you not into overweight women, you would not approach one .

if you do not like someone’s accent , it is most likely you will avoid them or keep contact to a minimum

would you not agree?

this is not about being politically correct but more to do with human nature

Being an American I do find certain English accents hard to understand, don't think that is racist.

I might be racist , but not because of accents.  Several times I have passed on boarding a baht bus because 3-4 indian men are shouting at each other in their own language.

What is it about certain cultures who tend to yell when 2 feet away from each other - and never stop yapping away the whole time they are together?  It is just annoying,  Maybe they are all hard of hearing and prone to constantly repeating everything they say ad-infinitum.  55

Once upon a time I made friends with some ball players from somewhere around Louisiana......

Their Cajun english was almost impossible to figure out = it got a lot worse when we took the field & the excitement took hold.....

Not necessarily accents, to be honest I find them quite fascinating in trying to pinpoint where people are from by their accent, or in the case of Asians, where their teacher was from.

It's mangling the English language when the speaker should know better and I don't mean syntax, hell's bells we do that ad nauseum in the UK, I mean words and phrases.

"i could care less.' Yes you could, but that's not what you mean, you mean you couldn't care less.

Every time I see or hear the word leverage, it drives me to fury. Do you mean affect? Yes you do. So say affect. Don't say effect when you mean affect or I'll kick you in the pods.

And you'll deserve it.

Sorry, I just typed leverage and it's infuriated me again.

For all you experts, and human rights activists

Is it racist to hate or dislike certain accents? ie when people speak English but with accent

I am not an expert or human rights activists, problem with TV is whether they would allow my experience.

I have a London Cockney accent and I'm called up north UK e.g. Newcastle, Sunderland a Cockney git or a southern fairy, us Cockney's use language very much less inappropriate in reply.

In Thailand people I have met from many other countries and Thais I have never have or had a problem with any except TV members.  ????

In Thailand they teach what they were taught " American English " not the "UK Queens English" like my mum use to speak but only on the blower. ????

Racism, or racialism as it used to be called, is malice and discrimination on the basis of race or skin colour. The word seems to have been morphed by lefties into a label that vilifies those who merely observe obvious cultural differences.

Some accents simply sound more pleasant to the individual than others, but that of course doesn't mean that we feel malice toward the speaker. It's a question of personal aesthetic taste - in the way that we all prefer different kinds of music, customs, manners and so on.

Accent does not bother....it's the attitude of some native and non native speakers of any language that can get hateful....

I used to live in an area where people spoke french. They used to be nasty and very insulting towards the British and American Expats who tried to mutter in french....I felt that it was a very disgusting way to behave towards people who were trying to speak the local language....

I also remember in a country where people spoke German...same issue...the locals were openly asking some english speaking expats to shut up and go back home as their german accents were what it was.....

So to answer the OP, I do not think it is very decent behaviour to dislike any individual just because of his accent,....in fact it's rather a stupid way to behave.....as one day it could be you who will be finger pointed on...never forget that.

Wrong question.  Had you asked, is it bigoted, I might answer maybe.  It's not racist.  The word racist has been co opted by the left for so long, that now the right uses it incorrectly.

Look! Look! He said it! Sorry wrote it.

He could care less, which means he cares to some degree.

If he couldn't care less it means he doesn't care at all.

So how much do you care Mr Sizzler?

By the way, what is a far left wing Marxist hustler? Che Guevara turned ladyboy?

Racist means you harm other based on race (or sex or gender or what ever) or more precisely: consider them less worth than yourself. Many people don't like certain accents ... or other things, hair or skin colour. The question is how you deal with it. I find most accents in a certain way funny. I once had a Russian student who spoke with a french accent (I'm german, he spoke german with a french accent). Turned out he lived in a community with 4 french girls ...

How about "burglarize", what's wrong with "burgle", it's even a shorter word ????

And to move to the sub-continent, one which grated somewhat is "prepone". Yes, it means exactly what you think it does. You could also have an outlet providing a "puncher repair service", fixing tyres rather than mending your boxing gloves.

English is such a wonderfully diverse and varied language.
