A Thai doctor went online to share pictures and details of what happened to a 57 year old man who caught Type A Influenza.

Dr Manoon Leechawengwong said on Facebook that a previously healthy man caught the 'flu after visiting a friend for several days in a row in hospital.

Treatment was started with "Tamiflu" - a common treatment for Type A and B 'flu symptoms.

His condition first improved then got progressively worse. He was admitted to hospital and died 30 days later.

While his immune system was compromised he was infected with "Aspergillus Fumigatus" a fungus that attacks the lungs.

He was a half pack a day cigarette smoker.

Type A 'flu is usually the most serious of the three types of the virus.

But people who die usually suffer complications with other diseases entering a patient's system.

Dr Manoon said that in the period of January 1st to July 11th this year there had been 192,445 cases of influenza in Thailand with 14 people dying mostly due to complications with lung infections.

vaccine will not prevent to get fungus (moldy room, ...) nor will it cure it .... for fungus you need antifungals, not antibiotics... many UTI are als fungal and that is why your fast UTI cure will not work ... just an example...

We don't know, but it is highly likely he had not had his annual flu vax and if so was most unwise to repeatedly visit his infectious friend in hospital and thus get infected with flu.

Of course if he had he would not then have died of complications as noted in the article.

Tri valent flu vaccination is currently available here against current strains in the Southern Hemisphere. Mrs Fantom and I make sure we get annual vaccinations before the flu season starts.

More likely fungi spores from the hospital causing the fungal infection in his lungs and the flu that killed him .

Any idea why that it would be more likely that the fungal spores came from the hospital and not somewhere else?

"In most cases, aspergillosis is caused by a type of mold called Aspergillus fumigatusAspergillus mold can often be found on dead leaves, compost piles and other decaying vegetable matter, stored grain, and even foods and spices. The mold spores may be carried indoors on shoes and clothing and can grow on carpeting."

cryptococcosis, coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, and pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP).

The most common in the bad old days was PCP, before effective antiretroviral therapies. The second most common was Cryptococcosis.

These are rarely seen now, especially in countries where they have good access to AntiRetrovirals.

Fungal lung infections can be caused by inhaling compost and soil potting mixes.. Also mould spores in musty environments, can become airborne and easily inhaled, which happened to me in Ubud, Bali many years ago. Two years to clear it..

Reports from USA recently state that the current influenza epidemic world wide has been caused by the strains constantly evolving and that the current tri-influenza recommended by WHO isn't truly effective this year.. Already at the beginning of winter and the peak period, has seen 350+ deaths so far in Oz this fiscal year of only 6 mths. Many have died even though they've been inoculated this year..

so now doctors can put a patient's x-ray on the internet, the patient isn't going to complain is he.
what is the point ?
why would a serious doc want his name in the news highlighting a mis-diagnosed / poorly treated / extremely unlucky patient that died ?
he doesn't get respect for that, from me at least.

had he cured the patient, despite complications and problems,
then he would have something to boast about.

Some people get a worse case of flu which can temporarily weaken the bodies immune system making it possible to get things like a fungi lung infection and pneumonia. Lots of people with Flu who develop pneumonia on top of their flu, have also died.

I might be wrong, but I think a bad case of flu results in a temporary weakening of the immune system.

The flu vaccine shot is not perfect, but it certainly helps. If you’ve had your shot and still get the flu anyways, it should be a milder case of  flu.

I’ve been getting my shot each year for about forty years now. Happy to do so.

Now and again we get a year when they didn’t get a good match between the vaccine, and the corresponding years mutated flu viruses of that particular year. It’s a bit of a prediction game. But even in those cases, the vaccine should still be able to help a bit ...maybe 20% -35% protection. And if you still get the flu anyways...maybe a milder version of the flu.

They also have Quadra valent vaccine now, as well as trilavalent...and also stronger dose flu vaccine for seniors because as we age...our immune system weakens.
