Two road sweepers in Suan Luang district were injured in an explosion on Soi Rama IX 57/1, a soi off Rama IX road at 8 on Friday morning.

 

After examining the area, police determined that the explosion was caused by a ping-pong bomb.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Several small explosions were heard in Bangkok in at least three locations on Friday and police said that two street cleaners had been hurt by what appeared to be a homemade bomb.

 

There were no other immediate reports of injuries.

 

Thai police said they were investigating the cause of the explosions. Some explosions were heard at a government office and others near at least two other sites near central Bangkok.

 

Bangkok is currently hosting a regional security meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and their counterparts from world powers including the United States, China and Russia.

 

A senior police officer said two street cleaners were injured by what appeared to have been a homemade bomb in the Suan Luang district.

On Thursday, Thai police said they had found two fake bombs on Thursday near the venue of the regional security meeting. The packages prompted a brief security scare but were quickly deemed harmless. It was unclear whether the meeting was the target.

 

Police said two men had been arrested in connection with the fake bombs.

 

China's top diplomat Wang Yi and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are attending the forum along with other regional and global officials.

Bombs suspected in two small explosions near Government complex in Bangkok

Two explosions occurred in a small park in front of the Government Complex in Bangkok’s Lak Si district on Friday morning, police said.

 

The Thung Song Hong police station was alerted at 7.05am of the double explosions in the park fronting Building B of the complex in Thung Song Hong sub-district. The explosions damaged trees.

 

Police cordoned off the area for officers from the explosive ordnance disposal unit to determine the type of bomb.

 

No casualties were reported.

BREAKING – Four explosions in Bangkok

At around 8.10am on Friday there was an explosion in or near a white car in a parking lot in front of the Mahanakorn Building, Bangkok’s tallest structure, near Chong Non Si BTS station.

 

At around 8.30am there was another explosion in a small flower nursery, located under a walkway connecting the BTS station with the Mahanakorn Building. So far, two people are reported to have been injured.

 

Pol Col Kritsana Pattanacharoen, Deputy Spokesperson of the Royal Thai Police (RTP), said that one of the injured people has been sent to Chulalongkorn Hospital. The other one suffered only minor injuries and was able to go home.

Two more explosions reported near Chong Nonsee

A further two explosions occurred on Friday morning, this time near the BTS Skytrain Chong Nonsee station.

 

Police said an explosion occurred in front of the Mahanakhon Building near the Chong Nonsee BTS station and a second in the sidewalk park under the station.

 

The blast caused the soil from the spot to spill out onto the sidewalk and cause a crack to appear in a glass panel at the station. 

 

The BTS station closed its Gates 2 and 4 following the explosions.

 

Police said the explosions happened around 7am, at almost the same time at the blasts at the Government Complex in Chaeng Wattana.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A total of six bombs exploded at three locations in Bangkok on Friday and one explosive device was recovered before it blew up, a senior police officer said.

 

Police Colonel Kamtorn Uicharoen told Reuters that three bombs exploded at the Government Complex in Chaeng Wattana and one failed to go off. Two others blew up in the Chong Nonsi area.

 

"The bombs in these two areas were improvised explosive devices triggered by timer," he said.

 

A "ping-pong bomb" exploded in the Suan Luang area, he said.

Prime Minister orders police to speed up hunt for bombers

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha pleaded with the public on Friday morning not to panic and instructed police to rush to bring those behind a series of bombings in Bangkok to justice, the government spokesman said.

 

Government spokeswoman Naruemol Pinyosinthawat said Prayut, who is also the defence minister, has been kept updated about the multiple bomb incidents.

 

She said the prime minister has ordered police to investigate the incidents and to step up security.

 

“The prime minister also seeks cooperation from the public. The prime minister asks the public not to panic and to stay alert and inform the authorities of any irregularities,” the spokeswoman said.

Updated: Bangkok hit by series of blasts, small fires on Friday morning

Bangkok was hit by a series of bomb blasts and small fires beginning early on Friday, a day after a bomb scare in front of the Royal Thai Police headquarters.

 

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha pleaded with the public on Friday morning not to panic and instructed police to rush to bring those behind a series of bombings in Bangkok to justice, the government spokesman said.

 

Prayut, who is also the defence minister, additionally ordered police to investigate the incidents and to step up security, and requested that the public report any irregularities that they observe.

 

The first incident happened at 7.05am in front of the Government Complex in the Chaeng Wattana area.

 

Officials there heard three explosions. The first two explosions were heard nearly simultaneously, with a third explosion coming a moment later. 

 

The Thung Song Hong police station was at 7:05am alerted to the explosions in the park fronting Building B of the complex in Thung Song Hong sub-district. The explosions damaged trees.

 

Police cordoned off the area for officers from the explosive ordnance disposal unit to examine the scene and they found that homemade bombs had been used.

 

No casualties were reported in this incident.

 

At 8:36am, a further two explosions occurred near Chong Nonsee station on the BTS Skytrain line.

 

Police said an explosion occurred in front of the Mahanakhon Building near the station, with a second going off in a sidewalk garden under the station.

 

The blast caused the soil from the spot to spill out onto the sidewalk, as well as creating a crack in a glass panel at the station.

The BTS station closed its Gates 2 and 4 following the explosions.

 

Police deputy spokesman Pol Colonel Kritsana Pattanacharoen said two people were injured in the Chong Nonsee blasts. One was sent to the Chulalongkorn Hospital, while the other was treated at the scene for slight injuries and let go.

 

Kritsana said police also found metal pellets at the site of the Chong Nonsee blasts.

 

Then at 8.50am, two road sweepers in Suan Luang district were injured in an explosion on Soi Rama IX 57/1, a soi off Rama IX road.

After examining the area, police determined that the explosion was caused by a ping-pong bomb.

 

Earlier in the day, police reported that four small fires had broken out in Pratunam area ahead of a Police Commission meeting, which was scheduled to be chaired by the prime minister at the nearby Royal Thai Police headquarters.

 

No one was injured by the fires, the causes of which have yet to be determined.

 

The first fire broke out at 5.18am in a single-storey building on Soi Phetchaburi 19.

 

Half an hour later, at 5.38am, another fire was spotted at the Indra Regent Hotel on Soi Ratchaprarop in Ratchathevi district.

 

Then at 5.41am, flames started coming out of a pile of clothes under the Indra Regent Hotel building.

 

Police said another fire broke out at the Chalerm Larp Market nearby at 7am.

 

All the incidents followed a bomb scare in front of the Royal Thai Police headquarters on Thursday evening, in which a man dropped two boxes under a Police sign which were later determined to contain fake bombs.

 

Two suspects were arrested on a bus in Chomphon that originated in Bangkok.

 

Kritsana, a deputy Police spokesman, said police investigators were checking whether all of the blast incidents were related, as well as if they were also related to the bomb scare incident in front of the Royal Thai police building on Thursday.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Six bomb blasts wounded at least four people at three sites in Bangkok on Friday, as the Thai capital hosted a Southeast Asian security meeting with top diplomats from the United States, China and other world powers.

 

The first small explosions were heard during rush hour, just before 9 a.m. (0200 GMT) at two sites near centralBangkok. A third blast was heard shortly afterwards at a government complex hosting several ministries on the northern side of the city.

 

Four people were wounded, the Erawan Medical Center said. It added that "none are serious and all are receiving medical attention at hospitals."

 

Three of those hurt were women cleaning the street when a bomb went off. Pictures on local websites showed them looking dazed and getting treatment from medics. One was seen being loaded into an ambulance.

 

The other casualty was from a device that exploded near the 77-storey King Power Mahanakhon building, one of the tallest in the city. Police Colonel Kamtorn Uicharoen told Reuters a total of six bombs exploded. One was recovered before it blew up.

 

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

 

"I would like to condemn those causing the situation which destroys peace and damages the country's image," Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Twitter.

 

"I have instructed officials to take care of public safety and those affected promptly."

 

TOP DIPLOMATS IN TOWN

Bangkok is currently hosting a regional security meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and their counterparts from world powers including the United States, China and Russia.

 

None of the Friday blasts were very close to the meeting venue.

 

On Thursday, Thai police said they had found two fake bombs near the venue of the regional meeting. The packages prompted a brief security scare but were quickly deemed harmless. It was unclear whether the meeting was the target.

Bangkok was last hit by a series of small bomb blasts in 2017. One man was jailed for planting a bomb that wounded 21 people at a hospital. He was an opponent of the then-military junta, which was led by current prime minister Prayuth.
