Stickman says Hooters Silom is closing...

Stickmans latest...

Just around the corner from Patpong, at the large Hooters branch on Silom Road some of the girls are saying that it will close at the end of this month. Girls at the Sukhumvit soi 15 branch have been saying the same thing…so it really does look like Silom Hooters is about to be goneburger. Apparently, the girls at the Silom branch will have the option to work in other branches of Hooters in Bangkok, if they so wish. Why is it closing? No idea, but with rumours of a 7-figure (yes, SEVEN) monthly rent, that’s a lot of burgers and beer to sell just to break even.

None of them had large Hooters. That was the whole problem, and in fact one of the (several) problems with Thai women in general, IMHO (in my hooter-loving opinion).

Horrible place, horrible food, horrible idea. Simply no need for this kind of anodyne but pretending to be sexy, yank outlet in Thailand. It does not have one redeeming aspect to it. I resented the way it displaced the Golden Bar at the Nana Hotel. A characterless place for characterless people. In Pattaya,  because of it cheap roofless design, the noise from Hooters disturbs hotels as far as Soi 13.

I am pretty sure the noise from Hooters is not going to perturb for too long in Pattaya.

The place is empty most of the time, and with the number one location they have

just in front of beach road the rent is probably not cheap, so the days are counted.

The bands,  TV and music make the noise not the customers.  Hotels like sandy springs and the Whitehouse have been adversely affected and have lost customers.

After watching the (disgracefully bad) AFL grand final game (by an 89-point margin) at the Sportsman on soi 13 on Saturday, a friend and I decided to do a tour of Soi 4. Haven't been there in many years. It was a fun change. Hooters was the least busy place on the soi at mid-afternoon. Maybe 5-6 guys spotted around the perimeter standups. Hooters looked utterly funless. Meanwhile Big Dog's and Stumble Inn were hopping and way WAY more fun.

I thought the idea of opening Hooters in Thailand was one of the most ludicrous ideas in a country with no shortage of ludicrous ideas.

The Hooters brand in Asia is pretty much going extinct.....All the Japan Hooters just closed along with a bunch of others they are down to one in Jakarta and 3 in Thailand and thats it.....

I expect the Pattaya Hooters it be following soon......They are going to have a whole load of free food stock from the 3 closed Bangkok Hooters that will have to go some where so they may leave the Pattaya Hooters open longer to sell it off.....

Hooters in USA makes really stupid business decisions, much like their decision to open up in SE Asia.  Examples: ...2) Hooters hotel/casino in Las Vegas.  They bought or leased a second rate hotel/casino off the strip and did minimal renovations. Stayed their once, rooms were cheap but really poor quality.  Common areas were real basic.  Hard to compete in LV with that kind of property.

I thought of this also as soon as I saw the headline.

Hey, let's takeover a casino in Las Vegas, and introduce a novel idea - scantily clad barmaids!

A good idea 70 years ago.

Correction.....I guess Hooters filed for bankruptcy in Japan but there are still a few open there...

The whole idea had a 'coals to Newcastle' or 'sand/oil to the Arabs' feel to it. There was little need for such a place in Thailand. The novelty was interesting for a while, the lasses pretty as you'd expect but there's no shortage of pretty ladies in Thailand as it is without the over priced food and drinks.

Personally an hour 'pervying' the pretty promo girls at Gullivers (or anywhere that has them) always made more sense as at least one can have a laugh with them as opposed to the often aloof ladies at Hooters...

A month ago there were 3 branches of the American boobs and beers chain Hooters operating in Bangkok – Sukhumvit soi 15, Nana and Silom. Tomorrow there will be none. The soi 15 branch of Hooters closed a couple of weeks ago and the Nana and Silom branches close tomorrow. Hooters attracted a lot of comments when it opened in Bangkok, many saying it wouldn’t make it with the relatively high prices one concern and the fact that boobs and beers has a lot of competition in Bangkok. And time has shown those who said that Hooters wouldn’t last were right. There were many complaints, and landlords complained they were not paid on time. It shouldn’t come as a great surprise with the writing on the wall for quite some time – Hooters Phnom Penh was abandoned after the builders weren’t paid by the same Thailand-based company which operated Hooters in Bangkok. Back to Bangkok, the space that was the soi 15 branch of Hooters – the first Hooters in Bangkok if I recall correctly – is being renovated and might reopen as another chicken place with sexy girls. It won’t be called Hooters.

Maybe an Oz company can open and call it

'Chunky Chooks' ?

Just an indicator of the  change in the market.

But it would be interesting to learn of the strategies local operators of  tourist night life venues (or if they actually have  any) in providing a  market that appeals to the new age of  Asian tourism  within Asia and Thailand  specifically.

The Chinese  and Indian tourists present quite  different  preferences  to the previous generally generic predominant European  proliferate style of  venue such as it  is/was even if in many instances  was OTT.

There will be objections  raised  by the long term or  habitual  visitors  from Western origins who will feel  deprived and reject the reality that any  market need  move  where the income is derived  or at worst  abandon  a market that is  not sufficient  any more.

So back to the  question of  what that will  be?  In the medium  term I would  look to  the  Indian  market because it is  projected to  become  a boom time era greater than  the  Chinese.

I seriously  doubt that it will see numerous venues  with  belly dancers and Pandit Ravi Shankar music with   onion bhaji  to encourage the consumption  of  beer.

More likely will  see  an increase  in calls to Uber or Grab  to shuttle people to  unspecified locations  for exactly the same thing Westerners willingly although with objection pay a  bar fine and do same same in outcome. And  before  departure those who  came with a  wife will be in attendance  at a specified gold shop to purchase and  pay for peace. The Pope does not  have a monopoly on sin tax !

The Soi 4 Golden Bar was always packed, they had a license to print money.
Could not understand the logic of replacing it with a tacky, expensive corporate chain.

Not surprisingly, it was generally as quiet as a Buddhist monastery retreat, I would see green tourists in there sometimes, looking bored.

Sure The Golden Bar was a sleazy, dirty, run down dump, but it was our sleazy, dirty, run down dump.

And we liked it!

Hooters Nana is still open, the Hooters on Soi 15 is undergoing renovations re-opening mid-month.  This is fake news and stickman edited it out.

As a rule, "closed for renovations" usually means "scrambling for new sucker investors". In many cases, the place never reopens (couldn't find the suckers).
