Democrat O'Rourke drops out of 2020 presidential race

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Beto O'Rourke dropped out of the crowded 2020 U.S. presidential race on Friday, saying it had become clear his campaign did not have the resources to continue to seek his party's nomination.

"My service to the country will not be as a candidate or as the nominee. Acknowledging this now is in the best interests of those in the campaign; it is in the best interests of this party as we seek to unify around a nominee; and it is in the best interests of the country," O'Rourke wrote in a post that he shared on Twitter.

O'Rourke, 47, a former Texas congressman, was struggling to qualify for the next Democratic debate after months of poor showings in opinion polls and lackluster fundraising.

O'Rourke, who became a Democratic rock star after almost winning a U.S. Senate seat in Texas in 2018, said he would also not be running for the Senate next year, a decision that will disappoint some party leaders.

"We will work to ensure that the Democratic nominee is successful in defeating Donald Trump in 2020. I can tell you firsthand from having the chance to know the candidates, we will be well served by any one of them, and I’m going to be proud to support whoever she or he is," O'Rourke's Twitter post said.

His withdrawal leaves 17 Democratic contenders for the nomination to run against the Republican president.

I liked him when he ran for Senate against d-bag Ted Cruz.

When he started running for pres that stunt where he stands on tables was a bit much.  "Filthy boots off the eating area, Tex!"

He started going off toward the end, I think that stuff he said about guns last week was a "go for broke" move, and it obviously broke.  Let's see where he goes from here.

Problem is Beto, like most politicians, will believe in anything that he thinks will get him elected.

Adios amigo...

Beto O'Rourke, a lightweight idiot wouldn't have had a chance against a heavyweight idiot like Donald Trump.

Never heard of the guy, and probably half the US population never heard of him either.

All that happened, IMO, is that no one was prepared to fund someone that no hope of securing the nomination. Costs a lot to run in the US.

and none have a realistic chance against the incumbent, IMO. Shame there are not any Jack Kennedy's around anymore. Anyone with a shred of charisma would probably be a shoo in, but the front runners look like they never had a laugh in their adult lives, IMO.

Bye bye Senor Beto.

You made a big bet and the world said forgetaboutit-o

He ran for Texas senator against Ted Cruz and lost...then he runs for President with views on gun rights...his view...NO GUNS AT ALL...Texans like their guns and Beto promised a buy-back program...followed by a swat-team to enter every home and confiscate the gun of those who chose not to participate in the government's buy-back program...he had other outlandish programs should he become President...total clueless individual...????

Hmmmkay. That figure is sort of like "constituional crisis", "no one is above the law" and (my favourite) "illegitimate president". You guys need to change out the talking points.  And how do you know its not 14,001.

Thank god for the deep state!

Really? Got some examples of how he doesnt "care" about the law? Number 1, 2, 3 if you can, give us the statute involved too.

Or are you just parroting nonsense as is the wont of the anti Trumpers.

Never mind. That would take this topic off topic. Too bad we dont have Beto as President ordering out the 101st to seize ARs from disabled vets and women.

Exactly.  I don't think there's been a solid Democrat contender since JFK.  Obama was a fluke that never should have happened.  Everyone was so into, let's see what a black President will do, they overlooked all the warning signs.  Clinton wasn't all that bad, but his wife would have been a disaster.

Clinton was a sleaze but the economy was good.
