Revelers asked not to release sky lanterns during Loy Krathong

BANGKOK(NNT) - During Loy Krathong Festival every year, members of the general public are always reminded of aviation risks posed by flying lanterns, and are asked not to fly the lanterns which might cause major harm to aircraft.

Airports of Thailand, the operator of Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok Don Muang, Phuket, Hat Yai, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai Mae Fah Luang airports, have issued a statement asking the general public not to launch rockets, fly lanterns, operate drones, or point laser beams, at aircrat to prevent potential harm to operating aircraft and obstructing the work of the pilots.

The announcement complies with the Air Navigation Act, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand’s (CAAT) regulations forbidding unauthorized operations of any unmanned aerial vehicles or drones in areas within a 9-kilometer radius of airports, as any foreign object can damage an aircraft if sucked into the engine.

In Ratchaburi, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand’s Don Tako subdistrict office has asked the general public not to fly lanterns, fly kites, launch rockets, or operate drones close to power lines or power stations, as Ratchaburi is home to seven power plants and some 10 power stations, carrying some 500,000 volts of electricity.

Any damage to electricity infrastructure in Ratchaburi can cause widespread outages in the southern, central, and western regions. Any incidents related to the power lines or power stations should be reported on 1416, 1130, or 1129 call centers available 24 hours everyday.

Just turn the lights off and sleep for 3 days ????

Why don't they just postpone or cancel the flights to ensure safety?

  • Popular Post

I have some questions...

In the 1950s 1960s 1970s 1980s 1990s 2000s up to about 2015 when nobody really gave a rats a@@ about the lanterns did the lanterns ever create a problem for airplanes?

How high do the lanterns fly before they burn out? How high do airplanes fly?

My guess would be except for when a plane is landing the lanterns do not come even remotely near airplanes...

So banning the lanterns near airports would be a good idea....

But banning the lanterns in the rest of Thailand only shows some one trying to do away with one of Thailand's uneek traditions....

Stupid! Any such flying object close to airports can cause death to passengers and the warning makes sense. Thai people are too often not aware of risks.

In all other areas of Thailand which covers 99.9% of the countries surface it does not apply so your suspicion is nonsense.

it appears the banning of the lanterns would be a good idea.... what about the banning of all the floating krathons with artificial/plastic flowers/decorations, metal staples, metal pins etc.... that will be thrown into the ocean creating extreme contamination/pollution, killing wild life, damaging reefs

Close to an airport I can understand. But I don’t think the lanterns fly high enough or far enough to be a significant threat to aircraft. It’s like fireworks, from the ground they look like they are going high - but would actually cause no issues for aircraft.

Asked not to, 55 red  rag to a bull.

Do they really need to be told....

Releasing balls of fire into the air ,where they land , we not care..... what could possibly go wrong

Well... starting with the promise of the half million fine...

Maybe some enterprising revellers can retrofit their lanterns, to be fitted to drones! Then they can 'run' them  away

Ban Christmas as well for many of the same reasons but add in presents being given that were made in low cost countries with terrible working conditions.

Makoto sell kratongs that dissolve and are edible by fish.

Everyone who has been in Thailand for more than five minutes knows that the locals never, ever take any notice of any directive. Which is why the authorities ban flights, because they know the locals will fly the lanterns anyway because the directive is just hot air (excuse the pun), has no teeth, is unenforceable and would never result in any action from the authorities.

151 flights postponed or canceled for sky lantern festival in Chiang Mai

Every year, the same problem.
