Loy Krathong clean up: Less trash more natural stuff, says governor, but plastic still everywhere

Bangkok governor Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang gave details to the press after the clean up by his staff in thirty areas of the capital where Loy Krathong was allowed.

He said there was less trash this year and more natural products had been used to make the little boats. But there was still a mountain of plastic to collect in other items.

By 6am this morning municipal cleaners had retrieved 502,024 krathongs 96.3% of which were made from natural and biodegradable materials.

Some 18,760 krathongs or 3.7% were made of styrofoam.

Last year 841,000 krathongs were retrieved so this year there were more than 40% less to collect.

Use of natural materials were up from 94.7% last year, said the general.

Foam use had declined from 5.3% of all krathongs last year.

Meanwhile, a Thaivisa reporter who attended a Loy Krathong event at Kasetsart University in northern Bangkok reported that the great majority of krathongs being floated in the large lake were made from natural products and bread.

Thais were busy quizzing vendors about their products and congratulating themselves on being eco-friendly.

However, there were still mountains of trash left everywhere with overflowing bins containing plastic bags used to carry food and plastic cups, plastic straws and plastic tops for drinks.

There was a lack of bins and many people had decided to leave their plastic items anywhere all over the campus.

Thaivisa notes that it is not just the krathongs themselves that make up the trash after such an event.

If they'd stop this mumbo jumbo, they'd have nothing to collect.

And cleaning needs to be done more often than just after such an event.....

Did you really think that Loy Krathong eliminated all the plastic?

Amazing how they come up with such accurate figures?

They use the same algorithm as that for calculating traffic deaths and tourist numbers. On fits all......

Bangkok governor Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang

So is he Bangkok governor or a Police General or can he multi-task like the PM?

I think more than a few of you haven't spotted that quite a few of the Krathongs contain ฿9 in ฿1 coins for luck.  There's always children collecting at the seaside where people have pushed Krathongs out to sea but they've been washed up back on the beach.  It's no wonder that the rubbish collectors are hard at it the next day.

As for it being 'Mumbo jumbo' as someone wrote, it's a really good excuse for a party and I had a lovely and very happy two days, thank you.  Mind you, I still wince hearing the discordant 'Temple Band' on these occasions, but then I came here for something different and it certainly is.
