Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha was the guest of honour at the December 17 “Nation Dinner Talk: Driving Thai Economy in 2020” hosted by Nation Multimedia Group at Siam Paragon Shopping Complex, Bangkok.

During the event, he gave a speech on the topic of “Driving Thai Economy in 2020” highlighting the government’s 20-year national strategic plan that will lead to stable and sustainable development.

“Many people have compared the government to a sinking ship full of holes, but I can assure you that it’s not true,” he said. “Our ship is stronger than ever and we can reach our destination as long as everyone helps paddle toward the same goal instead of sitting idly and dragging their feet in the water.”

After the speech by the PM, Deputy PM and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit and Minister of Finance Uttama Savanayana shared the stage for the seminar “The Face of Thailand in 2020”, where they estimated that the 2020 economy will recover as the trade dispute between superpowers starts to improve.

“The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that the global economy next year will expand by 3.4 per cent,” said Jurin. “As for Thailand, this year’s economy could grow by 3 per cent and next year’s projection could still be on the positive side. However, we admit that slowed down world economy and Baht’s strengthening has affected this year’s growth rate considerably.”

The commerce minister said that next year his ministry will pioneer new markets in 18 countries such as China and India, especially in provinces that show potential for Thai products, as well as finalize an FTA with Turkey, which will help paving the way to Middle East and European markets.

“We will also speed up the signing of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to be finished next year,” he added. “From the estimation by Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI), once RCEP deals are in effect they could drive up Thailand’s GDP up to 4 per cent.”

Yeh, positive because he is mentally disturbed obviously.

I think we're beginning to see some real desperation from him. He looks more gaunt than before so I suspect the pressure is getting to him.

The ship has only one big hole.... You????

I Take all it with a grain of salt.  Every time I  see him yak yak to the press I think "I wonder what a real leader in a real democracy would say".......  How is that for subtle sarcasm!  ????

Well, when all you can do is talk, I guess that's what you have to do.

The man's a clown-shwo, pure and simple. No discernible talent at all.

"During the event, he gave a speech on the topic of “Driving Thai Economy in 2020” highlighting the government’s 20-year national strategic plan that will lead to stable and sustainable development."

Perhaps you should scale back a tad and focus on a 1 year plan.

No Government continues the plan froth previous Government, so anything more than about 3 years of trough feeding is all you should be looking at.

...he does have an unusually large head.

Yes, I'm especially impressed the way you managed to stop the burning in the north in 7 days.  Your 'ship' is not strong, someone in a rowboat could have prevented the burning within a week, but the Captain of the ship couldn't do it.

Prayut indeed is no captain or sailor, but when this leaky vessel goes down he will probably shout at the opposition: you sank my battleship!

What can Prayuth say, "we lead the country since years and what we reached is a decreasing economy and it will become worse"?

Btw., an increasing economy of 3% is not so much compared with other SEA countries or other 2nd world countries generally.

I agree, I get the sense he is reduced to little more than an irrelevance to be wheeled out every now and again to make some feel good statements, then wheeled back and told to be quiet until they think of something else nice to say.  He certainly does not look well.

Anyone for massage?

Yes the Thai economy is doing well. Me and Prawit should know because the trough is endless because we always got our hand in it

He's a bit like the lady in the high rise car park the other day...

he got his forward & reverse mixed up... he's been driving the economy for 5 years in the wrong direction.

The economy is doing great. The army has never seen such high revenue.

Reminds me of this book:

Stop Paddling & Start Rocking the Boat, by Lou Pritchett, 1995 & 2007.

Some of the top 10 watchouts that companies that reach the top must avoid (pg 152):

  • lacking a clear vision
  • confusing short term motion with long term progress
  • becoming management oriented instead of leadership oriented

How strange. Seems like everyone else is panning the economy.

Still, he's probably smarter than everyone else and knows better. Whoopee, let the good times roll!.

Real democracy in the world.

Where might that be?
