should a restaurant show, by law, a price including tax in a special menu?

Well, Merry Christmas. I went to a well known restaurant to celebrate Christmas lunch with friends. The special Christmas menu showed a price of 1,390 baht. When the bill came, it showed 1,390+7% tax. Nowhere in the special menu was mentioned that the price DOES NOT include tax. Should a restaurant show a price with tax included or not? (name of the restaurant is not important, so don't ask ..)

It's kinda normal here....Not even service charge. Sure it should display that somehow but meh....? really complaining about 7% on a thousand baht bill?

Amazes me that anyone lives in LOS and expects it to be like "back home".

They will do whatever they like.

That's not to say that they shouldn't, as they should.

Not a problem for me as I never used restaurants that would have cost that much to eat at.

7% of 150 baht doesn't amount to much.

So only the amount matters - not the principal?

And nowhere was it mentioned that it included tax.

And the main menu of that restaurant has prices to which tax is added later so clearly that is the way they were going to do it.

What does Canada have to do with pricing in Chiang Mai?

I was just in a restaurant today that had NO prices, just menu items.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it....

Annoying is the "each to his own" handling.

MOST dining/eating places that I know show all incl. prices.

On the other hand almost all telecommunication prices are excl. tax.

It seems an attitude of "hiso" places to display excl. prices.

Example: "Chefs Table", Lebua Tower:

lebua.jpg

May make them look "cosmopolitan", not to irritate customers from "excl. countries" like US, Canada, ?

8200 + 7500 = 15700 excl., 18369 incl.

You get magnifying glasses for each course.

It's called haute cuisine, fine dining

They got their first Michelin star.

Just wait for the second.

When they pull that <deleted> I just treat the 7% as the tip I would have normally left.

But then you are tipping Mr Prayut!

Everyone gets a slice !!

Ive no beef with Prayut and would rather give him coin than some scumbag dishonest restaurant owner.

In saying that the restaurant is prolly dodgy and does not pass on the VAtTto the government !!

I think you are right about it being linked to clientele, mainly for those on expenses.

The UK is legally inclusive and when I was working I always had to ask for a tax receipt.

yabiaomer now come on.  When do ANY prices include the 7% VAT.  I don't know what country you are from but in the USA things like VAT which in the USA is called a sales tax in never included.  I have never seen any store or restaurant in Thailand also include the VAT.  Now if they include a gratuity, that should be disclosed up front but I would think most people would expect that they will get hit with the VAT on top of whatever price they see in a store or restaurant.

They should show the price that they want for the dish/menu. Tax should be 'up to them'.

It does seem to be the "better" places that show exclusive prices (perhaps that's why they're labelled "exclusive"). Most of the places I use are what you see is what you pay.

Try Malaysia where the prices are often +++ (sales tax, luxury tax, service charge) ????

tax is 7% so not really up to them.

The man who doesn't know what a seven-course meal is should get out more often.

Try a kaiseki or a dégustation (which can have more courses that the first class passengers did on the Titanic).

Most of the places I eat in don’t display prices either. But then, it’s so cheap that even minimum wage earners can afford to eat there.

I read a lot of interesting opinions here .. however, my question was mainly about the law in Thailand. The restaurants, supermarkets, markets and a lot more where I shop, even massage shops show prices including all. Should shops in Thailand, by law display prices including all? That's my question
