PHUKET:-- A 36-year-old Frenchman was taken into custody on landing in Phuket early this morning after he lit a cigarette in the aircraft toilet during his flight from Doha.

Maj Ekkachai Siri of the Phuket Tourist Police told The Phuket News that the Frenchman, Sadik Radoine, was on Qatar Airways Flight QR842, direct from Doha to Phuket.

“The plane landed at 6:49am. Security at Phuket International Airport boarded the plane to take Radoine into custody before allowing the other passengers to disembark,” Maj Ekkachai said.

Jolly nice chaps the French.

I note from the full story that he was spoken to by the captain, fined and released. I wonder how much the fine was?

Very bad. But I wished also people would be stopped to use electronic devices for vaping at every corner here in Thailand. It is much worse than smoking for others since a lot of "smoke" is created. Since I can see it now so often I am really surprised that nothing happens. I have thought it is not allowed...

Cigarettes have got to be some of the nastiest things on the planet... what a <deleted> idiot. I hope he was fined big.

It's vapour and it dissipates immediately.

But it is so much more bad smell than cigarettes and in respect of health it is still unclear. I was surprised about the big amount of vapor that is set free (for others). The laws should be enforced.

Perhaps he should have been detained on mental health grounds.

yes anyone who does anything wrong these days must automatically be assessed for mental health issues

No big deal...on ground,  on a Thai beach, a tourist can get a one year jail sentence with a 100'000 THB fine...in a plane it should be three times the penalty at least...at I happen to be a smoker too....

Not sure how that is going to end but I have seen fines up to 20,000 USD for that.

I was on an Egypt air flight about 5 years ago on my way here some guy lit up in the toilet no need for smoke alarm you could smell it all over the plane half a dozen staff pined him on the floor and tied him up. on the bright side for him he was first off the plane????

I have seen so many people smoking on the beach in front of the main police station here in Pattaya... Just recently. And they really got on my nerves with all the bad smell. I wanted to walk to the police station already and ask them for help. But I gave up because it seems to be impossible to fight against an endless stream of new law violators. But it could be a great source of income for Pattaya! But perhaps they have enough money and don't need this.

Totaly agree

plus all the butts ending in the sand

one more source of pollution.

A good idea should be a light fine at the first offend (500 or 1000 bahts)

but to force the offender to pick the garbage on the beach during 1 hour

and advertise it massively on social media

I remember the days of being a smoker. Taking those long-haul flights going back and forth from NA to SE Asia were torturous sometimes, but I was never stupid enough to take that chance.

I was curious about the penalty and see it was merely a fine, a scolding and on his way to enjoy his holiday. He must have been able to confirm reservations at one of the many hotels that are desperately in need of customers. Otherwise, would he have been shown the door out of Thailand? ????

And what happened to the "good guys in; bad guys out" rule for entry into Thailand. Here we have a person who has clearly shown no respect for a law made to keep people safe while flying, yet he's a "good guy"? But somehow, other people who have done noting more than try to spend a lot of (crime-free) time in Thailand using various visas and entry methods are deemed "bad guys" and turned away. I don't get it, but I don't think we're supposed to.

Mmm.... according to the interwebby, whilst some places can levy fines of up to 25,000 dollars... plus imprisonment... I’m afraid that the usual fine is between 50 and 500 dollars. I expect that some readers might be disappointed. Sorry.

True, POST 28 , the fugitive-musical-instrument-case named above was born in Brazil, but its origins are Lebanese.
Anyway, he does not care, he is a billionaire.

Well, even in the days when it was okay to smoke on airplanes, it wasn't allowed in the bathrooms because of the fire hazard that all the paper towel and tissue caused.

  • Popular Post

This is a non event, farting on a plane while having some kind of a bad stomach would have been much more annoying.

I also remember the days when you could smoke at will on a plane and it was normal.

They should have wrote a ticket, 100 Baht fine.

Why all the hysteria, the air you breathe on an airliner is filtered way more than most air that you breathe isn't it?

Based on most of the above comments you would think that we're lucky the plane didn't crash due to this smoking incident.

Ah that'll be why there has never been a smoking related fire on an aircraft then. Ironically the environment on a plane is now much more hazardous since to the smoking ban due to the air refreshing being turned down to save fuel

... and so would the aircraft!

Imagine the uproar if happened to blow, when near iraninnie airspace - guess he'd be ummm 'lucky' a SAM got blamed...

Sentencing wise I rather get caught smoking in a toilet plane then on a Phuket beach..

An off topic post has been removed. This thread is not about the ethnicity of the person involved.

Exactly!! So in other words, for any rich people from now on that read this, they can smoke away, expect to get fined on landing, and continue their holiday no matter how much it is!!  Unreal!!
