The Suphanburi provincial authority is offering a reward of Bt100,000 to anyone who gives a tip-off about sugar cane fields being burned while other province administrations have also stepped up efforts to curb air pollution during the harvesting time.

With smog posing a major threat to public health, many provincial authorities are taking measures to fight smoke emissions, which are mostly caused by the burning of agricultural fields, especially for sugarcane harvesting.

Suphanburi Governor Nimit Wanchaithanawong had called all agencies, sugar factory owners and district chiefs on Monday (January 13) to find a solution to the problem of smoke and law enforcement after delaying the agricultural burning ban for a year for locals to adapt to the new measure. However, some farmers continue to burn their fields, especially at night. The governor has announced a reward to people who inform authorities of any such violations by farm owners.

Meanwhile, Lampang, Phrae, Kamphaeng Phet, Phetchabun and other provinces, where there are sugarcane plantations, will encourage farmers to use other methods for harvesting and also install more PM2.5 detectors.

Some sugar companies said that the remedial measures have forced sugar companies to procure sugarcane harvesters as farmers do not have the ability to buy these machines. Sugar factories that need sugar must supply the harvesters. If there are not enough sugarcane harvesters for the farmers to supply to the factory, it must reduce the quantity and the planting area.

It's easy, make it illegal for sugar factories to buy burnt cane, employ one RTP officer to sit on his <deleted> at factory entrance to check incoming lorries and problem solved

Spot on but for some reason even though it's illegal to burn sugarcane it is still legal to buy said illegally burnt cane.

Very simple ... do not burn but plow as you do in all civilized countries!

should direct them to the perpetrators.

I'm sure they could use  the old

"its not my dog that savagely mauled your poor child..I only feed it  so am not responsible" excuse.

In reality they have to catch the arsonist red handed..because although its his field anyone could have set the fire.

Not solved... said fat rear-ended RTP officer is fed coffee/cakes and a large sweetener from the factory to look the other way from time to time!

100,000 baht reward for a tip-off would see "granny"  grass on her own siblings, much more effective!

Clearly you guys don't understand the issue. They burn the sugarcane BEFORE it is harvested. It makes it easier to cut. Plowing in is NOT the answer.

They already tried that in some areas and it didn't work. What happened is the farmers harvested and sold green cane, then went right back to the fields and torched them as usual. Thus, this 100,000 reward idea is really smart, necessary, and should be expanded to all types of fields all over Thailand.

No it is not! the issue is all about economics. A number of 'civilized' countries use the burning method including The USA, Brazil and Australia.

Yes they just reduce the price paid.   In my area the farmers remove the leaves as they cut the cane and burn them separately.....problem solved!  (sarcasm off)

But who do you report to in order to collect the reward.....the police already know coz they drive past it every day (and keep driving).

All solved with a few drones, and does not reduce people to becoming snitches.  Because, "tomorrow's  news?" ...  "Farmer attacks snitch with machete" Filed under "Snitches get Stitches"

PS: Troll AlertI am AGAINST BURNING the fields and air pollution, so no "educational" replies are required. Thank you very much.

No drones needed. There is infrared satellite imagery that can alert them instantly to the exact location of every fire. The technology exists, but the will does not.

Are you really all blind or do you not want to be the one to report the criminals who pass the bribes under the table?
Just look around, the earth burns at 360 degrees, you know for sure who the fields of fire belong to, well, here are those responsible.
Thailand has a very efficient legislative body, churns out laws and regulations in full swing, unfortunately the executive is not worth anything.
Yesterday we had the visit of the governor of the province here for a meeting with the managers of the sugar factory, even before the (very important) meeting began, the arrogant governor preferred to leave.
The meeting is over as they always end, promises that will probably never be kept!

Great theory. I'm certain that the RTP force would embrace it. How many trucks a day would be inspected? At 500 baht per truck, the officer would see this as a sweet deal and be smiling from ear to ear. So too would his up-line. Even the local Mercedes Benz dealer would reap benefits beyond reduced pollution.

There's lots of winners in this program.
