My wife is talking about buying our son a motorbike. He starts college soon so my wife's keen to keep an eye on where he is.

At the moment he uses our motorbike whenever he can.

I did a search for motorcycle GPS trackers. It came up with a whole range of different products.

A few use only the internal tracker battery, which doesn't seem ideal. One which can be installed and hidden within the bike (to preventing the rider noticing it) and using the bike battery seems to me the best option.

What we're after is a GPS tracker that sends the location data via the mobile networks - we are only interested in tracking within Thailand.

I've noticed some products require a monthly/annual subscription to send the data to you via some central control company.

Are there any GPS trackers available that only use Thai mobile networks, sending the location directly to (say) a certain number, so we can just pay monthly for the Thai sim installed in the tracker, in order to keep it working?

Any other comments on the subject would be appreciated.

Try Lazada, I ordered one yesterday - mine is a slightly different style to the one you need (mine is to attach to a dog that disappears for an hour every time I take him for a walk on the farm!) but they also have ones that hook up to the car/bike battery for checking on cheating wives etc.

Why would you say he's 21?

He's 15, not that it's anything to do with you, or relevant to the question.

age is relevant

Last time i checked driving age in Thailand is 18 y.o.

If you can't trust him enough to ride a bike or where he goes with it, he shouldn't be on one, esp if he's an unlicensed 15 y.o teen.

If he's an adult, tracking him without his knowledge is not okay.

but you do you, so it's ok..

be wary about installing gps on the bike though, wife might be able to track you down too when you do your usual quick visit at soi 11 to grab some beer. it's a double edged sword.

Oh, my bad then. that explains the high numbers of high school students riding motorcycles, speeding without helmets. Great

Just to be pedantic:

15 years old: can ride a motorcycle not exceeding 110cc.

18 years old: any motorcycle and a car.

Just to add, this information is just all on paper I think we can agree none of it is enforced at least in Pattaya.

That's very true. As we know the lack of enforcement means that few people will follow the law.

The only time it's relevant is after an accident or the occasional police check.

I bought a motorcycle for my wife. But her teenage son came to live with us and he used it to go to school. School was only one day a week for 4 hours.  He was going to an alternative school because he stopped going to his regular school for 2 years. After I found out he was lending it to his friend's I pulled it back and let him walk. Than he got a job while going to school so I gave it back to use. Than he decided school was too hard (one day a week for 4 hours) and stopped going. So he is back to walking since he knows everything now and is such a big shot making 7,000 a month working 10 and 12 hour days 6 days a week. Also not living at home anymore.  The deal was he go to school and can eat and sleep at home. Of course he promised to do that. 5555. If you give them enough rope they will hang themselves.  Thank god he turned 18 and his mother can't be held responsible for anything he does know.

"Thank god he turned 18 and his mother can't be held responsible for anything he does know."

The age of majority is 20yo in Thailand...not 18yo.

I agree that it' be easier to keep tabs on son thru his cellphone.  You'll know where son is, not where the bike is parked.

There are even hidden apps that will also let you record conversations and read texts/emails.  -Of course discovery of you keeping tabs may permanently damage relationship with son!

Nice to know I am not the only one concerned about kids and motor bikes, the first bike lasted six months before I finally took it back and sold it, he was refusing to wear crash helmet all the time, removing mirrors, disconnecting mile meter so could not monitor and going outside agreed set limits

At the same time he was banished to temple for two years

When he came back he went to hotel school, on a push bike, for the first year, recently got him a nice motor bike again and so far so good, he is respecting the rules most of the time

We do not want him killed like many other young kids

I still think about a GPS, or maybe just tell him one is fitted and well hidden !

You can track his phone via https://www.google.com/android/find or even see his movement history. You could also track a GPS enabled android device installed on his motorbike for only the cost of the sim card and data plan.

My son has a gmail account - I have the password, as he can't remember it if he gets signed out.

I'm not sure how this is supposed to work.

I tried to "Find My Device" by first only entering his email address:

It said "Couldn't send a Google prompt because your phone can't be reached"

That seems to suggest it will send him a message, which is obviously not what I want?

Hmm, I think weakness there would be him wanting proof by asking where he'd just been.

Find my device need the phone to be reachable via the internet and it does send a notification that the phone is being tracked. For the map history the information is here: https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6258979?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en or here if checking from a pc: https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6258979?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en&oco=0

Right, thanks. In that case we definitely don't want that option.

I tried "gps one C1 mag tracker" on Lazada as you said, but there was no result.

Could you be more specific?

Problem with these trackers is limited range and battery life. Looking for one with country wide range which connects to the vehicle battery.

This is the only problem yes.
