PHUKET: Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana yesterday (Feb 3) at Phuket Provincial Hall told a meeting of key figures in Phuket’s tourism industry that the government was already supporting the local businesses by implementing control measures to curtail the spread of the virus and apparently by still promoting tourism to Phuket.

Present at the meeting to hear the assurances were Phuket Vice Governor Suphoj Rotrueang Na Nongkhai along with the heads of government agencies and representatives from the Phuket Chamber of Commerce, Phuket Tourism Industry Council, Phuket Tourism Business Association, Thai Hotels Association Southern chapter, Phuket Professional Tourist Association, Phuket Old Town Tourism Community, hotel business operators, tour boat operators and airlines.

“Phuket has implemented strict measures to prevent pneumonia from the new virus on Jan 5 with disease surveillance measures, disease prevention and control measures, tourism measures and measures on public transport and to reduce the impact of the virus, which includes both fiscal and fiscal remedies,” the Governor said.

being out and about in Pattaya Phuket Chang Mai or other tourist spots isn't a seriously big problem as Chinese and western tourists rarely frequent the same places

The risks are plane bus train taxi and general public transport services were you have no choice but to mix with many nationalities

I don't have an issue in Pattaya as westerners tend to have their own places to go and rarely mix with bus loads of Chinese

One sneeze or cough goes about 6ft without wind. So riding your motorbike you could get nailed, and actually they bus load the Chinese to malls and restaurants up here in CM. The Chinese are into everything.

A friend who is an infectious disease doctor agrees with The NY Times article that this is already a pandemic with hundreds of thousands already infected and with no end in sight. Even the Chinese now realize it is out of control, and other countries are already blocking travel.
Thailand doesn’t seem to have a clue, maybe when their citizens start dying will they wake up. The lack of serious education here is scary and pathetic with their ridiculous lack of reality statements of everything is just fine. Time to start taking care of yourself and your families. Went to an huge outdoor market here and one man was standing with a hand cleaner for anybody passing by.....not many were availing themselves, and there were thousands of people. Also at a Mall yesterday they had the hand cleaners positioned around the place.

Rome-fiddling-burning springs to mind.

Unfortunately the westerners and the Chinese do have one thing in common they both deal with Thais. Don’t worry you can only catch it from the Chinese. ????

Stupidity now has a name, Governor Phakapong.

Learn to hedge your bets Gov. It is not a sure thing that this minor coronavirus will turn out like SARS or MERS.....it still might turn out like Spanish flu that killed 50 million. And it might cost you a lot of money as the tourist, the source of your wealth disappears from Thailand.

Don't worry so much. The Thai government is waaaaaay smarter than the rest of the planet. Everything is fine!

It has been mentioned in another thread that Thailand doesn't have the rapid test kits which have been developed so it takes days to get a confirmation, and there are 400 people still waiting for tests ..... so far about 25% of tested people have been found to be positive. So probably at least another 100 cases to go .... that's the optimistic scenario. The less optimistic is that this is like Wuhan 2 months ago.....

They should buy as many of these tests as possible because they're definitely going to need tens of thousands of them over the coming months.

There appears to be multiple versions of flu doing the rounds in various animals this year on top of this new one.

Is your head firmly planted in the sand?

Have you EVER been in a 7-11 or any other convenience store?
