Refused Hand-Gel between 2pm-5pm from Pharmacy. No Alcohol!

Featured Replies

I collected my son from his kindergarten at 2:30pm, and stopped in a pharmacy to get some hand-gel disinfectant.

There was one brand on the shelf with 70% alcohol.

I took it to the counter and the old woman cashier snatched it away.

No alcohol, 2 and 5pm!

Oh, but's it's hand-gel. People don't drink it.

At least my son and I don't drink it.

He's only 5.

No!

The law, no alcohol 2 and 5 pm. You live Thailand, you live Thai law.

After which it was put down on a shelf behind the counter.

I only wanted to clean my hands.

Was a bit strange.

Before any of the Thai apologists jump on me, I mentioned this to my Thai wife and she just sardonically said, "That's Thailand."

There are pharmacies everywhere, try another should be your first inclination,

not posting on TV.

She is following the law as she noted.

Give a laugh, say Mai pen rai, and move on with your life.

There is definitely a severe lack of educational proficiency amongst menial Thai workers in retail positions.

About a year ago, I was in a small Tesco Lotus buying some groceries, early afternoon so between 2-5pm. In with my groceries were two cans of A&W root beer. At the counter the young lady scanned all of my things before claiming "kaai mai dai ka" and showing me the root beer. I said back to her very politely and calmy "kaai dai kap. an nan mai mee alcohon kap". Then she gave me a funny look and disappeared into the back of the store. A minute later she came back in and scanned my soft drinks and I paid my bill.

I am not surprised that some buffoon refused to sell alcohol gel in the afternoon. Educationally challenged people in a job with no training generally have no powers of critical thinking and problem solving.

I would love to see the educational standards in Thailand improve. It's just a shame that you can't get a decent education in this country unless you are super rich, and even then that doesn't preclude you from behaving like a complete ignoramus. I'd gladly work for minimum wage in Thailand teaching students English and basic reasoning to help the younger generations have a better future, but because of draconian work permit and visa regulations I am just sitting at home with a big Chang (and no, I'm not talking about my wife).

Have you told this story before?

Anyway it's a simple mistake to make when bringing stock onto the computer's inventory. The person checking the goods in reads 'root beer'. They may never have heard of it but they do know that beer is generally an alcoholic drink so it's flagged up on the proscribed list so that the till will not allow a sale.

Does that sound too outlandish? I don't think so. Being a Brit, I don't know what root beer is either and I would probably have made the same mistake.

Did you ask her if she has a licence to sell alcohol?

A post referring to Thai people as a moronic race has been removed.

It also is what happens in a nation of people with zero common sense. In my 25 years here I've yet to experience anyone with it. How a nation can function without it really is quite remarkable.

Unfortunately it’s all too common in Thailand. I’m convinced there is a widespread 'Thick Gene',particularly prevalent in government officials.

Hong Thong, Lao Khao, hand sanitizer.  I see the resemblance, same....same.  Easy mistake by the pharmacist...fair play, clean call.

I think we know it as Ginger Beer? If I'm allowed to write that.
