If you want to meet normal farangs you have to stay on Thai Visa where we pretend to be normal. In the wild we are all the stereotypes we joke about. Well, not me, but I don't want to meet you.

  • Yeah, they're quietly just going about their lives.... Maybe a nod at a store from a few of the more outgoing ones.... Not too many conversation starters when out and about..... Actuall

Actually, not too much different than the home countries once you take the work equation away.....

Then, add the electronic factor - 6 people at a table playing on their phones ala - "social" media.....The art of friendly casual conversation has been lost.....

Normal people rarely refer to themselves using a foreign racist slur.

But then again, normal people usually live and die in their country of birth.

'Dedcription', nice play on words!

Farang is a generic Thai word for person of white race no matter where they may come from; the Americas, Europe, etc.

Is google wrong?  Is farang a racist term?

Does it matter, do you think it's normal to slip one foreign word in your sentences?

I've just asked my black pal if he ever gets the urge to call himself 'neego' when posting on forums.

Oh, and my pal from India claims he doesn't get the urge to call himself 'kairk' when typing online.

I'm betting the Koreans don't call themselves 'gowlee' either, but I don't know any to ask.

Take your own water bottle and visit the food court at Big C Pattaya Klang!

I meet a lot of "normal" people at my condo complex.  Lobby has several couches where owners hang out, the pool area, the shuttle, our resident minimart has tables and chairs outside where people meet also.

Have met 2 other Americans, a couple of Canadians, a few Swedes, a Norwegian, several Brits, a Scot, a Kiwi, a couple of fine Russian ladies, a German, a Dutchman, have enjoyed conversations with all several times over the last 6 months.

Corrected for you.

Woke up in a pedantic mood today.

Don't bump into many non-Thais at all. But, because of past encounters, when I do, I hide or avoid eye contact.

I dont follow you. Farang is just a catch-all word, not a derogatory racist word in my opinion. They do not know what your home country is to refer to you "properly"

I refer to many people in SEA as Asians, as I don't know if they are Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Malaysian etc...

Are you saying Thais should refer to non-thais as Caucasians or what ?

Wouldn't have come to Thailand if I was normal

I'm saying we shouldn't refer to ourselves by our skin colour, using a foreign word, because we know better.

I don't care much about Thais, they can say what they like.

I always thought of it as simply meaning "foreigner" (as in, not Thai).

But lets not derail the topic on this discussion please.

Still debating whether the word 'farang' is derogatory.

Is that normal?

Yes, am going off topic, that is "normal" for me.  ✌️

Got it now...just took me longer than "normal" (trying to stay on-topic now) ✌️

Normal means, ordinary, usual, typical. If you cannot decide think about the opposite of normal, abnormal, are you abnormal? and if so why do you think you are abnormal?.
