It is only early spring in Iran. Very different from constant 30+ degrees temperatures of Thailand.

MERS is a species of coronavirus which spread in Saudi Arabia in August when it is very hot.

David Heymann at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

“These viruses can certainly spread during high temperature seasons,”

Heat doesn't appear to be helping Iran and moisture is a breeding ground for any type of bacteria or virus.

" the quantity of water vapor in the air — strongly affects flu transmission, with drier conditions being more favorable. "

https://ccdd.hsph.harvard.edu/will-covid-19-go-away-on-its-own-in-warmer-weather/

so we are not talking about breeding but about transmission. As an argument against it people bring up cases in Iran or in Singapore.

Though Heat and humidity might inhibit the transmission of the virus to a certain degree, there might be other mitigating factor at those locations that more than makeup any affect heat and humidity has, Those mitigating factors are not present everywhere, but Heat  will be at most  countries experiencing summer.

The consensus is that we simply don't know yet. But it has in past case , so let's hope it also does in this.

So how do you explain MERS spreading in Saudi in August then?

You are right in saying we don't know yet it's all just speculation at this point.

Fingers crossed.

as i said two weeks ago everyone needed to decide where you want to be for the next six months.

i have been staying home here in Hua Hin except for large grocery shopping. going straight to what is needed in the store then out and straight back home. mask, hand sanitizer, social distancing. even in public staying as far away as possible from other people.

if you are over 60, living in Thailand you should starting thinking about what you are going to do when you get the virus. and don't say "go to the hospital."

and while i understand the Philippines are not Thailand, just look at what is happening there to see the possible next step in Thailand.

Lock down will come very likely but you’re already in lockdown so not much to adjust for u..

I'm from the U.S. and my wife and I were going for a visit on May 1st. We're now not going but want to reschedule for the fall hoping this virus quiets down. I'm waiting to see if EVA is going to waive their change/cancellation fees. So far nothing. I also l;earned the Ohio has closed all restaurants, bars and casinos. I'm better off staying in the village.

Isolate at home. Try to get food deliveries. Probably have two weeks worth of this and that dry goods, freezer, etc. Nearest neighbors are half mile.

Safe.

If you leave Thailand you may not be able to come back. Hospitals won't be able to cope in any country eventually. It may be better to get Corona early while there is still capacity. If you get a bad case in Thailand it's probably the end.

No one will be going on holiday. My latest concern is if banks fold and you can't access money. In the long term for instructions what to do watch any episode of the walking dead

I'm due to fly back to the UK at the start of Songkran for an important hospital appointment. The government's plans make it clear that when things get rough, all routine hospital appointments will be cancelled, and although to me it's important I'm 100% certain that the government will regard it as routine. So apart from stocking up with the usual cheese and sausages to bring back here, there's not much point in going to the UK. I'll wait another week or two before trying to change the flights, just to see how matters are panning out in Thailand before burning my bridges, but as things are I'd much prefer to spend the next four or five months here than back in Britain.

If I could 'believe' the Thai government figures, it is safer to stay put here. However, I still think the odds are 50-50.

Hopefully you have established a relationship with a local healthcare provider who can assist and provide care for you if needed. I am fortunate to have a good friend who is vp at a private hospital here in bkk who I have coffee with weekly and who keeps me updated on the virus. I would indeed call him and go to the hospital if advised to if I felt ill.

I hope you have a reliable health care provider that you trust as well because I would definitely miss your posts here.
stay well

my annual visitors are all packing up and leaving early after Canada sent warnings out to them all to return asap..

Is this thread about tourists or expats? Every tourist has to check what happens in his/her home country and listen to authorities and airlines. How hard can it be?

My home is here in Thailand since 33 years, my mother and father have already left. I think that living in a small, remote village in the Isaan is pretty safe, safer than anywhere now in the western world. The only danger for our family could come from junior tennis tournaments we will be going to for our daughter Amy twice or three times a month in Bangkok and Pattaya, but then, it's wearing face masks all the time and washing our hands all day long, just taking logic precautions.

A few have already been cancelled, but these are small tournaments not the size of ITF, WTA and ATP. If LTAT  cancels more, so be it, no problem with that.

LOS is were I live...warts and all and I  will be staying.  Besides my final resting place has been purchased for me by my loving wife. I will be next to Por and Mer in the hole in the wat wall which is the section of wall the family paid for.  I am hoping she is NOT working on a plan for me to move there soon!   I'll start to worry if I see the local handyman making the door and frame!  ????

Staying, when I moved here I accepted that I'd live & die here.

I have cancelled flights out for Songkran, no point as it was to visit someone in a care home and they're being locked down, so I wouldn't get in anyway.

it is a huge mistake to compare covid19 to the "normal" flu.

please stop doing it.

The virus's correct name is SARS-CoV-2.

"Covid-19 is not the flu. It’s worse.

It’s deadlier, more contagious, and more likely to severely disrupt our health care system."

https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2020/3/13/21176735/covid-19-coronavirus-worse-than-flu-comparison

The best case study to date is what happened on the Diamond Princess. 3,618 passengers and crew interacted freely for at least a week and were then put into quarantine for 2 weeks. Everyone was tested, some more than once.

3,618 total tested

705 confirmed CoVID

392 were asymptomatic, which means only 316 showed any signs such as sore throat, fever, cough

7 (maybe 8  ) died

Out of 3,618 that were exposed over a prolonged period, 7 died.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_pandemic_on_cruise_ships#Diamond_Princess

There are now multiple videos of people from the Princess and videos of other people who had the virus and almost all are saying that people are overreacting. This is just one of many examples: https://www.foxnews.com/media/couple-recovers-from-covid-19-after-cruise-we-encourage-our-fellow-americans-not-to-panic

The underlying assumption is that the passengers and crew of a luxury cruise ship are typical of the population at large, and that their medical treatment is also typical of what would happen to large-scale numbers of cases

Thus far, American citizens abroad still seem to have the right to return, even though they might face a 14 day self-quarantine at home right now depending on where they're traveling from... But whether that will remain the case moving forward and how that might change, hard to know.

For me, if I was looking at that situation, I wouldn't WANT to be traveling back to the U.S. right now even if I could. Lots of airport exposures, long trips on multiple aircraft, crowded conditions with people from who knows where, etc etc... None of it conducive to protecting one's health.

Actually they were much older than typical population. There was a story that showed that there were many people over 80, more over 70 and even more over 60. I was surprised about the average age being that old.

And fit.  The halt and the lame don't go on cruises

Citizens always have a right of return to their own country. That's the whole point of a passport, which is a document issued by a citizen's government requesting other governments to allow the passport holder "to pass without delay or hindrance". To refuse the right of return means the citizen's government is imposing on some other government unilaterally the burden of caring for that person
