I’m arriving in Chiang Mai tomorrow and didn’t expect this

Featured Replies

I didn’t realise the city was on lockdown.

Can anyone please provide a link to the rules you need to follow?

I’m on my phone and it’s hard to find anything.

I was expecting to arrive at the bus station and get songthaew to city center like usual.

I can walk but will I be fined for being outdoors?

Will I be able to find any guest houses I can book into?

Someone please enlighten me.

Thanks!

Yes.

Calling Food Panda and Grab.

Why are you coming to CM?

Nothing is open.

No bars, restaurants, malls, etc.  No massage on Loi Kroh or any place else.

Deader then dead.

Good point.

His previous posts say Bangkok.

So OP, you may be subject to 14 days quarantine at your room.

You might be able to get here but no one cant tell you if you can get back.

I do not know why this should be a surprise to you, the restrictions apply across the country and will only get tighter over the next days.

Go to Riverside Condo, rentals 1 month up 10K to 15K a month.

Shorter term, Leaf Serviced Apartment, 500 baht/night. The condo has plenty of places to buy food nearby, doubt they would all be shut down.

I was on the islands (Samui) and they didn’t shut the bars until the last few nights of my holiday.

Nobody was saying anything about how serious it was up here (island life)

So I really had no clue.

I don’t mind a Netflix binge for a few weeks.

Just want new visa and get room safely.

Afaik you have to self quarantine for 14 days when comming from Bangkok.

I assume if you arrive by bus tomorrow morning they will wait at the bus station and will take your details, I guess you have to tell them where you stay and have to head straight there. I don't know how it works if you have nobody who can buy food for you, maybe Foodpanda or Grabfood.

Watch out, a foreigner in Buri Ram ( Isaan) had to pay a 20,000 baht fine, even having a health certificate. He didn't stay at home for 14 days.

Coming from Bangkok, you might be one of them to stay at home.

Nobody knows how that will end. Best of luck!

The whole world has been closing down now for the last several weeks - gradually & at varying pace, from one country or city to another - and we still have 'tourists' stumbling around the place wondering what's happening and being surprised at each new development.

Plus the air's really good for breathing right now, also!!!   :cheesy:

I understood the coming curfew hours are supposed to be 8 pm to 6 am.

Taking a bus here? OMG be careful and keep your mask on and hands clean with sanitizer. No BS.

Basically if you do not turn around and get out of the country now you will be stuck here and it will not be fun for you in CM. I just got my friend out today on his way to the US. FYI. Thai Airways shuts down entirely on Monday for it is said to be 1 month. And I have credible info from Thai airways in CM and also my daughter works with them in BKK.

There will be a curfew and food you will need to be creative on using application.

As for me, my wife just closed her restaurant for 3-4 weeks ( paid all staff 3 weeks), I just went again and stocked up on alcohol and food today with my family and will hunker down and be in home exile.

Not going to go outside at all unless necessary and thank goodness I have a pretty big home and can go in and out with a nice yard.

I am not sure after all the rules come into effect that you will be able to rent a room that easy here, but there are literally hundreds open. But you better have a face mask and you better have money and a visa or extended days as you will not be able to move or get out of CM for approx. 2-3 weeks. Cannot move freely to any other province. Semi lockdown.

Restaurants only do take out.

My advice is be prepared or get out now as most all flights internationally have been cancelled. Curfew will restrict your movement.

You were in Thailand and claim you knew nothing of whats been happening.

With newspapers, internet news, apps  (the waitress in the bar), thats just impossible, unless your head was under that big rock on the island.

So for your info:

New measures will come into effect this Thursday, There is only speculation on what they might be at this time. Although the government spokeswoman has confirmed that a curfew is not on the table.

So wait and see, but read the news and keep up with the times.

Its the uninformed like you, that can easily be a spreader because you don't know the regulations...get with the program.

This is the information the OP needs:

https://chiangmaione.com/people-returning-from-bangkok-now-being-screened-for-coronavirus-in-chiang-mai-6468

Yes, he will be checked at Arcade bus terminal.

Yes, he does need to self quarantine for 14 days. Yes, he will almost certainly get reported by someone if he does not.

The upcoming state of emergency will probably make these restrictions tighter.

The UK government is now advising British tourists here to return home if possible. if I were the OP I would consider going back to my home country right now.

If that is true you may want to find accommodations outside of Chiang Mai so you're free to move.  Great time to visit rural Thailand.  No such rules out in the boondocks. Hunker down somewhere modestly rural until the all clear is given.

If you are still in Bangkok, change your destination. During these months, Chiang Mai often has the worst P.M. 2.5 air pollution in the world. Pick anywhere with lower levels of air pollution.

The combination of that pollution and probably the highest density of infection in S.E. Asia means that Chiang Mai is the perfect storm. Developing respiratory problems because of the pollution will significantly increase your chance of needing critical care when you catch the virus. That will be expensive and may not even be available if, as is likely, the outbreak saturates the health system.

If you feel you must be in Chiang Mai, you should order a good air purifier online for your hotel room, one of the ones costing a few hundred dollars. The aircon that is already there will not remove the P.M. 2.5 particles. That may seem like a lot of money, but you are going to be stuck in that room for at least two months and a good purifier does make a big difference. You can sell it again when you are leaving, it is never difficult to sell a good air purifier in Chiang Mai.

It is worth the money even in the sense that it reduces the chance you will develop a pollution-related cough which will freak out the Thais working in your hotel. The coming months will be difficult and frightening for the locals, you do not want to be a farang with a cough.

Once you have a stable, safe place to stay, you will be fine, this is not a zombie apocalypse. Food will increase in price but remain available, there won't be any particular shortages, the delivery services will continue. If you can possibly get a flight back home, however, don't hesitate. Unless home is London.

I was tested for virus at train station and I’m fine.

Hopefully I can get away with saying I’ve come from Samui and I just passed through BKK.

After all the posts on here, you still don't seem to get it.

The bottom line is...with your type of attitude, you could be a danger to others.

Please listen to advice on here..remember you started the thread for this exact advice. Enuff said!.
