Notice has been posted, Pattaya Hard Rock Hotel is closing April 1, may re-open June 1, but not a definite re-opening date. Some staff receive 75% of salary for 2 months if they remain in town, zero $ after 2 months unless it re-opens.

generous payments for the employees compared to other Thai operations.

Nothing to do with being generous as its a requirement under the labour Protection Act.

50% of the staff at my work are staying home for the month of April, in 75% salary as well.

Even the mega rich Seminole Native Americans have their limits.   Its terribly sad.  So many Thai friends were looking for work even before this happened.

Interesting thing is how they actually owe a good part of their wealth to the Genting people in Malaysia for loaning money to the first Casino on a reservation.

Please explain what you mean!

He won't because he can't. I suspect he is from the old school where the welder on the shop floor knows more about finance and running a fleet of ocean going ships than the board of P&O did. Without him the company would never have existed. It is just the usual comment from the politics of envy - If I can't be successful why should anyone else? Straight out of the left wing/union playbook of the 1960's. Send the company broke - that'll teach them rich b@st@rds a lesson!! What do you mean I'm out of work now?

The good news is that these dinosaurs are slowly dying out.

That's for sure I think I paid 700 baht for a hamburger there in 2004. Last time eating there. Can make 4 Hamburgers at home that is better than theirs.

Hardrock hotel was always overpriced for what you got anyway.  I always chose other nicer hotels.

Still think of it as the old Merlin...

Well the local SKINT farang will not be paying their rates ever....So I guess its best they close....But since they don't rely on local cheap Charlie's that is the least of their concern

All hotels will have to abide by Thai employment law and pay their staff 75% to stay at home.

That's going to hurt and a lot of international chains that are now in real trouble will remember that when it comes to the inevitable permanent closures to follow.

I was dating a girl back in the early 90s out in Los Angeles.   We joked that just like the movie :Green Card that was out at that time, that her dad could give me 20k and she could move in.  TIme passed, I moved back East.  I was sitting in Forxwoods, the big and one of the first big Indian casinos and was reading the tribal newspaper.  It announced they were just paying back the 300 million dollar loan to the LIM consortium from Malaysia that had bankrolled the slot machine setups.  Hmmmm the girl I was dating was named Lim and was from Malaysia.  So I called some friends back in California and sure enough that was her Uncle.  Damn.  I should have given her 20k USD!
