As reported in a popular Bangkok newspaper, Thai Hotels Association (THA) says 30,936 hotels will temporarily stop operations and expect to have zero income in April. There are 32,564 registered hotels in Thailand, so about 95% will cease operations. Consequently,

Because they are shut?

Did you read the OP?

Not all are shutting. Those remaining open are not noticeably cheaper than before the crisis.

One of the receptionists who I'm very friendly with at the Sabai group said yesterday they are not even entitled to this 5000 Baht government handout.

If she isnt god knows who is.

Yes. I literally typed "Not all are shutting". Most are, but not all. Some hotels are remaining open.

I am merely pointing out that, among those that are remaining open, none appear to be offering discounts.

I don't see anything controversial or inaccurate in this.

If there are fewer places available, and there are people in the current environment searching for accommodation, I expect that indicates sufficient demand for the prices.

probably more like asking price or shut down.

maybe an insignificant discount if you grovel and ask, but thays more of just a social lubricant.

As a long time tourist before moving to LOS to live, many hotels and guesthouses deserve to close, as just bad news on every level.

I stayed at hundreds of hotels and guest houses, and a few were excellent, but most were shoddy, overpriced, had poor service, and in some cases staff were outright rude. Too many with thieving cleaners, and decrepit rooms and bathrooms.

If this makes some re evaluate their operations good news and those that think they can just return to normal when it's over should go bankrupt, IMO.

In Thailand I learned new definitions for the words 'Resort' and 'Mansion', less glamorous than the ones I previously had!

Resort...means it has trees/greenery in the grounds

Mansion.....means its a two story + building................:cheesy:

It doesn't matter if the hotel evaluates their operation because I think tourists will be evaluating Thailand against its competitors for their holiday in the future.

The Aetas Lumpini, will definitely have no income for April or the 5 months after, as they have closed up the 5 star hotel completely and will re-open sometime in September.  I dropped by in March before the curfew went into effect to have a nice lunch, only to find one lone security guard, the doors chained shut, and a note in Thai at the only available entry point indicating such.  So there is a hotel with no income for 6 months because of COVID and the slowdown.  I checked also on their website and it is confirmed, closed for business.  Now I wonder if they will not be used to house 14 day Quarantined Thai Nationals or such in the near future.   Eerie to see the building totally dark at night.

I'm sure the investors and shareholders can afford it, the staff, on the other hand, will struggle, a lot.

I'm not sure why they think September is the magical month for reopening.  This crisis has a long way to go.

I agree that staff everywhere is taking a huge hit if any are still getting something from the company. If not then they are left with zero income.  I wish I knew why some places believe September is the failsafe, or maybe it was just 6 months out and they all estimate the virus will be gone by then. Not sure.

My Bangkok hotel of choice. Sad news but then I can't see Tourism opening up within the next 3-4 months anyhow.

Can you define "opening up?"

You know what I mean and if you're going to be pedantic, I didn't use a question mark.

Not being pedantic.

I can't see main stream tourism "opening up" here for 12 to 18 months, minimum.

If you mean by "opening up" the Thai Prime Minister declares all is well in Thailand an opens the boarders, what good is that if tourists can not get out of their country, and planes are not even in the air.

The term "opening up" is very broad.  Without the world "opening up" I can not see how Thailand can "open up."

Fair enough,

I mean allowing tourists back into the country.

I agree. The issue is that even if Thailand re-opens their borders they are still going to insist on a health certificate which is nigh on impossible to get and insurance covering Covid for a minimum $100,000, again impossible to get.

Even if you CAN get post those two hurdles, I suspect it's automatic quarantine for two weeks so for 99% of tourists, whats the point of going?

I am desperate to get back to see my wife but realistically I do not think I will be seeing her for the next 6 months at least.
