Covid-19: More booze bans coming? Thai province bans alcohol sale at all convenience stores: cooperate or we'll shut you down

The province of Nakhon Pathom in central Thailand has ramped up regulations at all convenience stores.

Their action might be a foretaste of things to come for other provinces, notes Thaivisa, as more and more governors see convenience stores as places where the coronavirus can be passed on.

Nakhon Pathom governor Channa Iamsaeng - flanked by provincial police commanded Pol Maj-gen Khamron Bunlert - said he was ramping up regulations after a meeting of his virus crisis committee.

There should be no alcohol served in all convenience stores at any time. If stores don't cooperate with the order they face being shut down under Article 35 laws.

All staff are to wear face masks and customers are encouraged to do so. Hand sanitizer must be supplied to customers and people must practise social distancing of one meter in the store.

The stores were told to stop people lingering within them.

The clowns that make these decisions have a cellar full of booze or can can just make one phone call and have as much alcohol as they want delivered.

Well lets hope in other provinces that people in charge have more sense and not stop people going to food stores.

You can go there for food but not alcohol how ridiculous.

A much used phrase in current times "there is no cure for stupid".

Oh woe is me, what ever will i do, if they ban alcohol sales here?

Yes i must be losing the plot, as i dont drink, must be spending too much time on here.:cheesy:

The silver lining of this would be less dead and injured on the roads, a lot less if they can keep it working...

As of yesterday, I saw three different groups of farang sitting together, drinking, outside of closed bars. Several bottles of beer on the table between them. As this was at 10:30 in the morning, I guess is was breakfast.

Perhaps, if it's not so readily available, it may stop these people from sharing a virus droplet with the rest of the neighborhood.

The link between alcohol and C19 is summed up right here in what Keith says.

Alcohol is inexorably linked with socializing and socializing is inexorably linked with C19.

There is some very logical thinking behind the alcohol bans.

Fine. Then prevent people from doing just that and stop penalising responsible drinkers who are having a quiet one at home.

So called English breakfast.

It's not an LOL moment. Drunk people are the least likely to take precautions and present the highest risk. The appropriate precautions such as correctly wearing masks and sanitizing hands are not going to be followed by drunks. Alcohol also encourages people to hang out in groups.

Shutting down all alcohol sales throughout the entire nation makes sense and is entirely in line with all the other measures that have been taken so far.

Responsible drinkers can be considered collateral damage.

The only plus side of being stranded in the UK is red wine bottle shaped and a touch of universal credit now somehow I passed the habitual residence test after 20 years away????

i live in the country just outside Hua Hin. last night saw a few groups of expats having "private" garden dinners together and knocking back the wine. also saw a lot of backstreet snooker tables (likely private) with large groups of thai men playing and downing HongThong. similarly lots of thai groups drinking outside convenience stores and in gardens.

i guess this is what they want to stamp out. can't blame them really they are destroying their economy and tourist industry to save our lives and a large minority of us are out on the vino every night. not exactly helping are we? (and by we i mean residents of thailand, temporary or otherwise)

And just how do you suppose that they can possibly introduce such a 2 tier system?

then do the sensible thing and ban people from gathering and drinking in public

banning alcohol sales is not the answer

I was in a 7/11 yesterday and bought a can of fanta and drank it outside - should that be banned too ????

It's not banning stuff that is the problem here it's the lack of logic that makes what they are doing complete nonsense although it really is no surprise at all

thats not the way it works in thailand and you know it. faced with telling someone not to do something or removing the tools needed to do that something.. thais will always choose the latter, because, face.

You're talking about "lack of logic", yet you're confused about the difference between a soft drink and alcohol???

I think it's called policing, and being responsible, whilst leaving stores open. Or something similar. It's working elsewhere.
