Some 70 people were caught on Lay Phang Beach late yesterday afternoon (Apr 3). Photo: Cherng Talay Police

PHUKET: People breaking the provincial ban on going to any of Phuket’s beaches during the current COVID crisis were given a sharp reminder from police late yesterday afternoon (Apr 3) after officers sounded their siren, sending some beachgoers scrambling across the sand to flee.

Capt Theera Chanthong and fellow officers from Cherng Talay Police arrived at Ley Phang Beach at about 6pm after being informed that many tourists were back enjoying the beach, ignoring the order issued by Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana last Sunday (Mar 28).

Under the order, all beaches in Phuket were closed. The order is to remain in effect until at least Apr 10, but may be extended further. (See story here.)

I went to Lamai beach this morning maybe 10 people on the 3 km of the beach in a case like that i don't think it poses the slightest danger.

Swiming is good for the immune system and the morale too! ????

Anything free will always get banned first the golden rule of Thai policing ????

Ridiculous to ban beach fun.

You need to thank those having beach gatherings when that was advice only. Now that it is established people cannot behave responsibly on their own, all needs to be enforced.

Eventually a Chinese style system to access a beach will be imposed. Register with an ID card or passport, pay a fee for a limited time (say 2 hours), get a card, go through a turnstile. Get penalized if you exceed your limit.

On Surin beach the other week about 20 farangs having a party drinking and blasting music looked like Italians if people had just gone there 1 or 2 and keep your distance there would not have been a problem

Lucky it was not the PHilippines, imagine Duterte turnig up on the back of army truck and opening up with a 55 cal.

Typical was it the pasta that gave it away?

I saw at least 3 massage shops open today. Are they allowed because the initial ban was 2 weeks to the 31 of March or are they bending the rules?

Yep just like the beach folks in the states, all back home now and the virus cases or all coming back positive. The beach looks health and it is it is the fools who think they are immune. Bust all of them put them in jail for endangering the population

I can't believe there are people here ridiculing the ban.  Staying home is tough - especially for those that have kids. Its bloody awful but its absolutely necessary. Try what we have here in the UK!

People who ignore this are at least, creating a situation where tougher measures will be introduced and at worst, will cause deaths. Totally irresponsible and dangerous. What gives anyone the right to put others at risk?

What's even worse in this case is that its mainly foreigners in the photo. The Thai government and press will have a field day with that info!!!

Yep.  Plenty of Spring Breakers went home with more than the typical hangovers and herpes this year!

Mardi Gras attendees have also helped turn New Orleans into the next death zone.

Are the authorities trying to specifically ban beach fun or are they trying to stop the spread of the virus?

Apparently. Otherwise it would have been a request for social distancing at the beach, not a ban.
