I lived in Taiwan for 20 years. 

There are a number of places I will go to as soon as the "all clear to come or go" switch is flipped, and Taiwan is one. Without the visiting Chicoms and other tourists, you should be able to get a feel for what it used to be like before the locusts descended.

this month 4 yrs ago, Laos, Cambodia, took my wife on her first ever holiday in her life, left on my birthday, was in Laos for her birthday, and it was a belated honeymoon. she was happy and smiling everyday for 2 months. sitting here in the evening drinking good cold loa beer was heaven.

Would love to go back to Laos, but not at this time of year, to bleeding hot. ????

It's interesting to me how many people here do not travel very often outside of Thailand.

Visited Charlottesville, VA last October.  Enjoyed the heck out of the Washington National's playoff games.  A 90 minute delay in Frankfort caused a missed connection, and I collected 450 Euros compensation.  Lots of steak and good beer.
