Get help with living costs if you cannot return to the UK because of coronavirus

You can apply for an emergency interest-free loan if you’re a British national and you cannot travel back to the UK because of coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.

You cannot apply if you live abroad permanently or if you want to extend your stay in another country.

Who can apply for a loan

You can apply if you:

  • are a British national or dual British national
  • live in the UK
  • have a UK bank account
  • are 18 years or older
  • cannot get other financial help, for example from your insurance provider, tour operator, bank or family and friends

What you could get

The emergency loan is to help with living costs until you’re able to return to the UK. The loan can cover up to 3 months of living costs.

You could borrow up to:

  • £3,000 if you’re travelling on your own or with people who are not your immediate family
  • £4,000 if you’re travelling with your partner
  • £5,000 if you’re travelling with 2 or more members of your immediate family

If there are flights you could take to get back to the UK, you’ll be told to apply for a return flight loan instead.

What you’ll need to apply

You’ll need:

  • your UK home address
  • your UK bank account details
  • a digital photo of the main page of your UK passport

You can still apply if you cannot upload a photo of your passport, but it might take longer. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) will contact you after you apply to discuss another way of providing your passport details.

Repaying the loan

You’ll need to repay your loan or set up a repayment plan within 6 months of getting the loan. If you do not, your passport may be cancelled and your details may be passed to a debt collection agency.

Find out how FCO will process your data if you apply for an emergency loan for living costs while you’re abroad.

Well, to be fair, you sound more like an expat than a tourist, which it is aimed to help...

Does this mean that

1. you did not book a flight back as quickly as possible when the UK government urgently asked you to do so because commercial flights might soon be unavailable, and

2. later, you failed to book a seat on one of the emergency repatriation flights when the UK offered them and informed you that you would be left to fend on your own if you chose to stay behind in Thailand?

1. Flight was booked back but the flight did not go it was cancelled and still no refund or new ticket but hopefully that will happen soon.

2.i had been in constant contact with the embassy trying to get a repat flight but kept getting told i was on the list. Its not easy to get the money to just chance booking flights especially the price of them

Writing was on the wall in Nov-Dec last year that this would escalate, you took a chance, and got stung, if the Gov are not willing to give you funds (loans), then they have their own reasons for declining such.

Hardly their fault for being prudent with tax payers funds.

I did take the chance i hold my hands up there completely.like many i thought it would not get like this but i was very wrong. I also pay taxes and have done all my life.not here to argue just a bit annoyed they could not help at all.i see everyday ppl at home who have never payed taxes or worked and quite comfortably live off our taxes. But yeh i took the chance and boy do i wish i didnt but cant turn back time or i would
