Statues are reminders of our past, good and bad. They encourage us to examine our past, both the glory and the infamy. removing these statues actually seeks to whitewash our history. Was a press ganged sailor any different from a slave, yet Nelson relied upon them. 

I just cannot understand ,if Britain is so racist and we glory so much in our imperialistic past ,why do so many of these people we "hate" so much want to live in Britain ,why not go to a nice country that loves them ?

It's weird that you somehow manage to put statues of abusers to the same basket as holocaust remembrance sites. That doesn't sound normal. 

I did a rough count of 24 seperate genocides since the end of WW2. Most of these more recent genocides were of Black and Asian people. One could make a case that obsessing over the holocaust is racist, but I won't. I'm just suggesting that if we need to be reminded of the horrors of genocide, the others should also be represented.

Should we also take away the free Scholarships that his money has been providing over the last 100+ years--it is blood money isn't it.

 

Or would the University like to keep hold of that part of his legacy. ......................................

 

 

The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University (and College) fees as well as providing an annual stipend. For the 2019/20 academic year, the stipend will be £15,900 per annum

A memorial is different to a statue. It is remembering an event, and frequently those who perished in it. A statue, on the other hand, is lauding an individual.

When I was in Phnom Penh one of the popular tourist attractions was Toul Sleng genocide museum.

 

I did not go myself since I thought it was in bad taste. Lots of back packers and tourists going for something to do and to gawk at pictures of the unfortunate victims who I feel deserve more respect.

 

I felt at the time that the place should be demolished out of respect to the victims and the place turned into a memorial park with maybe a memorial wall with the names of the victims and a small museum of pictures to explain what had previously stood on the site. The bones should be given a decent Buddhist burial in a common grave.

 

These victims need to rest in peace not be the source of revenue and entertainment.

False comparison. I see them more as museums. And I'd put a lot of these statues in the fantastic slavery museum in Liverpool to keep them on show as reminders not in celebration.

I totally disagree with you and think that you have completely missed the point.

 

S21 (Toul Sleng) and, more importantly, Choeung Ek Genocide centre are not tourist sites but memorials established by Cambodians for Cambodians. It was the choice of the Cambodians to recognise the genocide in this way and they have made a good job of it. The audio presentation at Choeung Ek is particularly good - harrowing at points.

 

 

This atrocity occured in my life time and I knew little or nothing about it. It is thanks to visits to the Genocide centre that my knowledge improved.
