Rhodes Must Fall - Oxford protesters target statue of colonialist

I wonder if any of them are studying under a Rhodes scholarship, or indeed at Rhodes College. Will they want to change the name of that? Or turn in their scholarships?

'The beginning' is for foreign troublemakers to be returned to their home countries ..... is my opinion. Don't like the way things are done in the UK? choose somewhere else to live (like I did).

Statues are reminders of our past, good and bad. They encourage us to examine our past, both the glory and the infamy. removing these statues actually seeks to whitewash our history. Was a press ganged sailor any different from a slave, yet Nelson relied upon them.

I just cannot understand ,if Britain is so racist and we glory so much in our imperialistic past ,why do so many of these people we "hate" so much want to live in Britain ,why not go to a nice country that loves them ?

No, what you are saying is the reasoning for putting up a statue of a man responsible for the devastation of Southern Africa are the same as those for maintaining Holocaust sites, sites where the darkest aspects of humanity were evident.

You are using one of the most evil periods of modern times in a nauseating manner.

Well it may not be, you being a save the earth kinda guy.

Would you like me to mention more evil periods of modern times that GB helped quell...

Nah, useless to go down to the same low level.

No, I want you to admit what you said was wrong and stop deflecting from making that admission. But I doubt you have the courage to do that.

I'm not sure what you are trying to implicate.

As a reminder, that the holocaust should never, ever happen again.. yes of course those should be kept as places, where people can visit and remember the horrific history.

It's weird that you somehow manage to put statues of abusers to the same basket as holocaust remembrance sites. That doesn't sound normal.

I did a rough count of 24 seperate genocides since the end of WW2. Most of these more recent genocides were of Black and Asian people. One could make a case that obsessing over the holocaust is racist, but I won't. I'm just suggesting that if we need to be reminded of the horrors of genocide, the others should also be represented.

Should we also take away the free Scholarships that his money has been providing over the last 100+ years--it is blood money isn't it.

Or would the University like to keep hold of that part of his legacy. ......................................:coffee1:

The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University (and College) fees as well as providing an annual stipend. For the 2019/20 academic year, the stipend will be £15,900 per annum

I agree and honestly, I couldn't care less about the statues. What I find disturbing is the knee-jerk reaction by those in power. Already Sadiq Khan is implementing a program to remove statues of people who have chequered histories without proper consultation. It's his dictororial attitude that I find offensive.

It happens now and then that left-wing people are put in positions of regional political power.

So we can look forward to them imposing their prejudices and views on everyone by removing the memory of great people of the past and replacing it with "George Floyd Square" "Rosa Luxemburg Lane" and "Antifa Close".

They get their 4 minutes of fame with their left-wing buddies and in a few years it will all be changed again.

You're lucky though, in Germany the left was much more shameless and changed entire cities' names. We had Karl Marx City, I kid you not.

And folks make fun of USA's obsession with guns. Can you blame the nutters for thinking a race war is imminent? I can't, all this is some serious crazy <deleted>. I'll bet some of these survivalist compounds are on full alert.

All statues in the UK should be replaced with ones of Harry Kane and Son Hyung-Min.

Answer my question, your opinion on Holocaust sites that are kept as "statues" to the past.

Are you "stuck"..?

A memorial is different to a statue. It is remembering an event, and frequently those who perished in it. A statue, on the other hand, is lauding an individual.

Robert Milligan has gone...hope the momentum keeps moving forward. Take them all down.

It is still GB history, statues are erected by those in authority at the time, for what ever reason..

What you mean scholarships funded by money that came from exploiting, enslaving and destroying civilisations that existed prior to rhodes arrival?

Tell you what, if the uk makes reparations and, at an index linked level, pay back all that was stolen through the years of occupation, you may have a point.

Now they know and instead of simply complaining online, they are taking real action.

Isn't that something more than just being a snowflake?

What is your opinion on the Nazi Holocaust sites, which are kept as "statues" to the past...?

Yes....good point.

When I was in Phnom Penh one of the popular tourist attractions was Toul Sleng genocide museum.

I did not go myself since I thought it was in bad taste. Lots of back packers and tourists going for something to do and to gawk at pictures of the unfortunate victims who I feel deserve more respect.

I felt at the time that the place should be demolished out of respect to the victims and the place turned into a memorial park with maybe a memorial wall with the names of the victims and a small museum of pictures to explain what had previously stood on the site. The bones should be given a decent Buddhist burial in a common grave.

These victims need to rest in peace not be the source of revenue and entertainment.

If they weren’t at Oxford they would be calling them dossers, the great unwashed etc etc so snowflake is about the best they can come up with on this occasion.

Another one who spouts yet has no idea what his forefathers got up too....????

False comparison. I see them more as museums. And I'd put a lot of these statues in the fantastic slavery museum in Liverpool to keep them on show as reminders not in celebration.
Would you support statues of Hitler as a memorial to the Holocaust?

I totally disagree with you and think that you have completely missed the point.

S21 (Toul Sleng) and, more importantly, Choeung Ek Genocide centre are not tourist sites but memorials established by Cambodians for Cambodians. It was the choice of the Cambodians to recognise the genocide in this way and they have made a good job of it. The audio presentation at Choeung Ek is particularly good - harrowing at points.

This atrocity occured in my life time and I knew little or nothing about it. It is thanks to visits to the Genocide centre that my knowledge improved.
