Bank error in your favor! But honest Thais rush to the police to show their innocence!

Sanook reported that an SCB ATM machine at a branch in Ranong in the south of Thailand went barmy on Saturday spewing out too much and too little money.

But the fortunate ones were not thinking that Saturday the 13th was their lucky day.

Along with those who had been underpaid they went to the Muang Ranong police to report their innocence.

Siam Commercial confirmed that a system error had led them to temporarily shut down the Tha Road machine on Saturday night around 8.30pm. They were not prepared to reveal the extent of the problem yet citing the need for more data and a technical report.

The police said they had received about ten reports from both people who had got too much and too little. Mentioning bank secrecy laws they would not say any more than that.

Things are expected to return to normal at the ATM when systems checks are completed.

Hmmm, what would I do if it happened to me.........................?

I think I'd put in my condo, in a clearly labelled envelope, and wait for someone to come and ask for it.

OR, if one was near, take it into a branch of that bank.

Handing it to the BIB, no, I don't think that I'd trust it to get to where it belonged.

In that hypothetical situation as long as you got a receipt it would be only a problem for the police, not you.

A failure of modern technology, no way. Maybe someone has worked out how to alter the electronics just like they did when the electronic poker machines (slots for the yanks) replaced the mechanical ones.

It will be a fill error.

Someone mistakenly put 1,000 baht notes in the 500 baht note cassette, for example.

But would that explain why some people were underpaid.

It would if they also mistakenly put the 500s in the 1,000 cassette.

Yes, you have got it right, but I have to admit that if I knew I would get away with it 100%, I would keep it as the banks have screwed me, but there is no way you cannot be sure you won't get caught.

I borrowed 1000 euro's from my local credit union, and noticed that they didn't take out my repayments. Nevertheless, I always left 1000 in the account on the assumption that they would realise their mistake.

5 years passed and nothing happened. On coming to Thailand, I closed the account and withdrew the money. They had ample time to notice their mistake and didn't.

thinking I was lucky, I made more small withdrawals
