Phuket woos tourists with 'Wow' campaign

More than 30 local tourism businesses including hotels and resorts, tour operators and other tourism businesses are offering special promotions from July 30 to August 2 at Parc Paragon, Siam Paragon, Bangkok.

 

The Phuket Tourist Association with support from the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation and Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched "Phuket…Ded Tang Koh" (Wow! Phuket) campaign, aiming to boost domestic tourism and support tourism entrepreneurs following the huge impact from the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

Phuket Tourist Association also has lined up activities under the so-called "Phuket Model for Thai Tourism to Survive" project believed to help boost confidence among travellers and stimulate domestic travel.

 

 

Bhummikitti Raktaengam, president of Phuket Tourist Association, said that Phuket has zero new Covid-19 cases for more than 60 consecutive days and has been able to control the spread of the virus efficiently. "Phuket Airport has reopened to domestic flights since mid-June, and we have witnessed a slight bounce back in local travelling," he said.

 

Currently, five domestic airlines are operating flights to Phuket: 12 daily flights from Bangkok, Koh Samui, Chiang Rai and U-Tapao. We expect that other flights from Udon Thani and Chiang Mai will resume very soon, he added.

 

"Phuket’s economy undoubtedly relies on tourism especially from overseas tourists. We welcomed over 14.4 million tourists in 2019; 10 million overseas tourists and 4 million Thais with overall revenue from tourism reaching Bt480 billion," he said. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Phuket’s economy has been dramatically affected and devastated.

 

"We are working closely with the government, local officials and private sector to develop stimulus plans and projects to help over thousands of local businesses in Phuket survive.

 

The earliest period we anticipate everything to come back to normal is mid-2021,” said Bhummikitti.

 

Phuket Governor Narong Woonchiew said Covid-19 had affected Phuket and its economy tremendously.

 

Phuket's economy mainly relies on tourism, especially International tourists. Phuket's loss is estimated at Bt1.6 billion in the first two quarters. The losses will mount if Phuket still cannot open for international tourists in some form, Narong said.

 

"The 'Phuket… Ded Tang Koh' (Wow! Phuket) campaign offers domestic travellers great and amazing deals from hotels, resorts, tour operators and many more. We have also created a series of events and activities from August to December 2020 to meet with travellers' interests and lifestyles," the governor said.

 

The Phuket Tastival Seafood & Gastronomy is being held from August 15 until September with a series of weekend activities along the beaches of Rawai, Patong, Ao Chalong, Old Town Phuket and Choeng Thalay, aiming to reinforce Phuket’s reputation as one of the world’s best culinary creative cities listed by Unesco.

 

In addition, Phuket will host a music event called "Plern Rim Lay" Festival, an on-the-beach new-normal-style music festival starring Phuket-born singers such as Gam-The Star, Non-The Voice and Chaleng Sam Fay (from the famous local band Cha-Leang) at Sapanhin, Phuket City.

So they paint a "W" on each cheek now, before they bend you over in the tourist trap areas....

They have allegedly been able to halt the spread of covid but not the spread of money that's with the 1% so I can't see this working very well for the other 99% it's doomed to failure????

Does "domestic tourism" really contribute anything to the Thai economy ? Looks to me as if the same amount of money is just getting moved around a little ????

Foreign Tourism money found it's way into Thai pockets, eventually it found it's way into the Thai economy which made a big difference.

Thai domestic spending in tourism is notably far less extravagant, hence all the promotions, subsidies etc to try and open the local pockets a little further.

Doesnt seem to be much to worry about if these figures are correct......................which they are obviously not!!!

This news leaves a bad "tastival" in my mouth because it sounds like testicles.
