Covid-19 Cases Among U.S. Children Jumped 40% in Late July

Coronavirus infections among U.S. children grew 40% in the last half of July, according to a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, bringing the total number of child infections to 8.8% of all U.S. cases.

The report, which aggregates data from 49 states, comes amid heated debate over whether schools should re-open in the fall. While the surge of infections contradicts President Donald Trump’s assertion that kids are “virtually immune,” the data also show that child infections make up a disproportionately small share of the overall outbreak in the U.S.

Just under 9% of all cases. Would be interesting to see figures regarding recovered, hospitalized, needing ICU intervention and, sadly, deaths due to Covid-19 related infections in this sector of the population. This could clarify the motivation for calls for opening or keeping schools closed. Anyone on this forum able to supply a link to this info? Much appreciated.

Donald Trump has just murdered more innocent Americans than Osama Bin Laden on 9/11! And he wants to win re-election! Think about that...

The issue with children is not deaths in them (I have seen numbers for that, it is still under 1,000). It is their role in community transmission. Children neither live nor attend school in a vacuum inhabited only by the young. They have  parents, teachers, grandparents, neighbors etc they can infect.

The true number of infected children is likely many fold the reported number since such a high proportion of their cases are asymptomatic.

The US no doubt looked at Denmark, Germany and Sweden where opening the schools did not result in any major spike in cases.

'From a big study from UCL in May, children are 50 per cent less likely to catch coronavirus and when they do the symptoms are very mild in the majority of cases.

'A new preliminary study by PHE says transmission is very low and poses little to no risk.'

'A new study that has been done in UK schools confirms there is very little evidence that the virus is transmitted in schools,' he told the Sunday Times.

'This is some of the largest data you will find on schools anywhere. Britain has done very well in terms of thinking of collecting data in schools.'

The PHE study, which will be published later this year, tested more than 20,000 pupils and 100 teachers.

What a shame then that children go home after school, and to many other places too.

Perhaps the investigators responsible for this unpublished, unreviewed study will be asked by the scientific referees to actually determine overall transmission by children to the population at large and not just within the school itself before it is accepted for publication?

A 40% increase when it started at next to nothing means it's only up a smidgen, but makes a dramatic headline.
