Hangover Cure Successfully Tested on Drunk Subjects in Finland

A group of Finnish researchers believe they’ve discovered what people have spent centuries searching for: a cure for hangovers.

A dose of 1,200 milligrams of amino acid L-cysteine was found to reduce alcohol-related nausea and headache, while a dose of 600 milligrams helped alleviate stress and anxiety, according to a study published in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism by researchers at the University of Helsinki and the University of Eastern Finland.

The randomized, double-blind study had 19 healthy male volunteers consuming alcohol doses of 1.5 grams per kilogram over three hours in a controlled setting. The subjects were then asked to swallow placebo or L-cysteine tablets containing vitamin supplements.

I take 600mg every day that I buy from iHerb. Not for hangovers though, just general well-being.

Also prescribed here to help clear phlegm from the chest when congested.

Pain is nature's way of telling your something isn't right. Hangover telling you maybe not such a good idea to poison yourself with too much alcohol.

This cure seems to let you feel everything is fine when it isn't

Along lines of giving a drug so you can keep your hand on a hot stove burner. You may not feel the pain, but damage is being done

Call me cynical but this from the end of the attached report -

The researchers received funding from Catapult Cat Oy, which sells the L-cysteine supplements.

The study ran into certain difficulties. Some participants weren’t able to consume all the alcohol required and had to be excluded, some had such high tolerance levels that they experienced no hangover symptoms; and some were sidelined because they insisted on topping up the dose by heading for the bar, researcher Markus Metsala told local media.

So I query how scientifically proven this really is......:burp:

Oh dear! These guys are light years after! I´ve come up with the perfect solution over 10 years ago.

alcohol damanges the liver

paracetamol DAMAGES the liver

l-cysteine is not NAC, but NAC helps to detox ... THE LIVER....

Both of these damage the liver mainly if taken in massive doses continuously over long periods of time.

Taking a few paracetamol/tylenol even every day will not damage a normal liver.

I've noticed lots of people demonising this very safe drug over the last few years.

I bet you never take it do you because it's going to damage your liver? Well, you're wrong.

The main problem would be the likelihood of facing a 50 years jail sentence in Thailand for possession of 0.1 gram ????

You sound as if you're really fun to party with!

I hate Apple Juice, it's like non-alcoholic cider!   PML

You've got a headache because you're dehydrated. Alcohol is hygroscopic.

Drink water.

yes, plain old water drunk alongside alcohol and/or before you go to sleep works very well

Iherb is a cheap and quick source.  I take NAC Sustain twice daily for allergies.

Really? Who are you? Batman?

L-Cysteine, the amino acid named in the OP as a hangover cure is a COMPLETELY CHEMICALLY DIFFERENT COMPOUND to N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), and has completely different chemical and pharmacological properties.

It is really not sensible to assume two compounds with similar sounding names are the same compound.

L-Cysteine is an amino acid and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a chemical relative with an entire extra carboxylic acid group  (-COOH) in place of one of the hydrogen atoms (H) on the amine group.

If you think that won't make a difference, try drinking hydrogen peroxide H2O2 instead of water H2O, as that is only different by one oxygen atom.

N-acetyl cysteine.png

L-Cysteine and N-Acetyl L-Cysteine are different and provide different benefits to the body.  Thanks for correcting my mistake.

N-acetyl-cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, N-acetyl cysteine, and N-acetyl-L-cysteineare all designations for the same compound, which is abbreviated as NAC. NAC is a precursor to the amino acid cysteine, which ultimately plays two key metabolic roles.

N-acetyl Cysteine (or NAC) is a more stable form of the amino acid L-Cysteine

NAC is already wildly used for this purpose. Nice to see another scientific study verification. Normally comes in 600 mg capsules. ????

I found the cure years ago, I STOPPED DRINKING ALCOHOL!
