Resumption of tourism between China and Thailand 'not happening any time soon'

A senior official of the Chinese embassy in Bangkok has ruled out early reopening of tourism between China and Thailand, as the two countries are not ready to open the sector.

 

China has been recently reopening for domestic tourism, but has not yet welcomed foreign tourists, or urged Chinese people to travel abroad, said Yang Xin, minister counsellor and deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Thailand.

 

Even Chinese tourists want to visit Thailand, but Thailand is unlikely to open for foreign tourists, he said in an exclusive interview to Nation Multimedia Group.

 

The Thai government has not yet reopened the tourism sector, as it was still worried about potential import of new Covid-19 cases. The government only plans to allow first 200 long-stay tourists to enter the country next month. About 10 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand annually in recent years out of some 40 million every year.

 

Yang said that China was currently reopening travel for business persons who could apply for fast lane clearance when they enter China for doing business. Foreign business persons are not subject to 14-day quarantine but they can visit only limited places essential for their business activities.

 

He said the Chinese government has managed to control the Covid-19 outbreak and now schools nationwide have been reopened after they were closed for eight months.

 

China this year has not set a target for economic growth but would focus on job creation and people's living standards, he said.

 

The government has implemented many stimulus packages to support people and businesses especially small and medium-sized enterprises, said Yang.

 

Regarding Hong Kong, Yang said that the special administrative region had returned to stability following the enforcing of the security law. He reiterated that China wants to maintain the one country, two systems principle,  but foreign interference was trying to create a two-country system.

China has a trade war with US.  It wants to preserve hard currency and will not encourage its citizens to travel overseas for a while.  My guess is until the economical situation is cleared up.  Minimum is not before Chinese new year 2021.

 

Thailand is still being coy about letting foreign tourists in.  But honestly there is not much risk letting Chinese in right now.  China is highly regulated to fight Covid.  To give you an example: in one university, they do not let students go off campus.  

 

IMHO, It is better for Thailand to force the issue saying Chinese can come in without any hurdle and then hear what Chinese government respond.  Use belt and road project to entice too.

The Chinese could just quarantine in the Chinese owned buses and order Chinese takeaways from Chinese owned companies. They could add to the tourism numbers and be called "Zero Baht Tours".

According to worldometers, while the US has 583 deaths per mil pop, and a dozen or more countries are in that ballpark or worse, China has only 3 per mil pop! And the other metrics for China are similarly impressive. So what are we waiting for?

Oh, and if you believe China's numbers, I have a bridge over the River Kwai to sell you, the Death Railway appropriately (though I know, the Japanese first built it).

It should stay this way until there is a vaccine. And that goes for ANY tourism. 

A big problem i see happening is tourists refusing to wear masks, especially now with all these Anti-maskers growing on a daily basis

This suggests there will be no significant resumption of tourism...at all...any time soon.

 

If the Chinese are not going to be visiting...it's a safe bet they also won't approve tourists from anywhere else.

 

The big decisions on Thai tourism will (like most all of Thailand's big decisions) be made in Beijing.

What metric(s) will they use to determine when to open the country?  To put some perspective on this, the CDC in the US says they will be happy with a vaccine that is 50% effective (they are hoping for 70% the same as the flu vaccine).  Then there is production, distribution and inoculation ... this will take us to, at best, end next year with a vaccine that’s maybe 50% effective.  Let’s also not forget that many will refuse the vaccine.  A likely scenario is a 50% effective vaccine that has been administered to 50% of the population by end 2021.  So when will it be safe enough to reopen?  Does anyone seriously think people can get by indefinitely under these circumstances?  It does not matter to the Chinese government, they don’t give a toss about tourism.

IMHO, It is better for Thailand to force the issue saying Chinese can come in without any hurdle and then hear what Chinese government respond.  Use belt and road project to entice too.

A Chinese friend tells me he was locked into his school campus (he's a teacher) for several weeks when schools first reopened.

 

However, in June masks were allowed to come off and now they only need to use the tracking app and undergo a temperature screening.
