No, meteorites have not been falling over Chiang Mai, says expert

A leading expert has said that claims that villagers have found a field full of meteorites in Chiang Mai are wide of the mark.

 

Villagers in the Mae Jaem area had been collecting strange rocks.

 

Someone noted there were lights in the sky back in August as proof the rocks came from outer space. 

 

Now Supharik Khrihanon of NARIT - the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand - has poured cold water on the idea. 

 

He said that the rocks were volcanic in origin or what are called extrusive rocks. 

 

Their composition is different to meteorites. 

 

They had likely been in place in the area since long ago when there was volcanic activity in the area.

What a Pity! lost opportunity to create in CM, the most important museum of extra spacial meteorites and stranges things in the world.

The rocks seen near Chiang Mai are clearly volcanic 'glass'.  However there are meteorite fragments about 500,00 year old (I think)  in the eastern part of Issan. These are the western part of a strew field of meteorie debris which extends over part of southern Vietnam too. They can be collected near Dalat - or they could  be in 1986 !

I'm surprised that no lottery number was found

Within a few months time they will not even be able to see the sky due to the horrendous pollution caused by the crop burning.

Absolutely, meteorites are likely what's behind the mysterious forest fires that destroy the air quality for 6 months of the year. They should set up a team to investigate ASAP!
