Foreign tourism reopening: Key operator slams government for inconsistency, lack of communication even damaging tourism

Featured Replies

I don’t see anywhere in his comments where he “slams” the government, simply saying they are not communicating together is not slamming.

Now if he said the people in charge are a bunch of monkeys who have no idea what they are doing, this would be slamming (and a lot closer to the truth).

  • Dream on pal, that will never happen, since when did Prayut or any of his cronies ever listen to anyone. They know best, well silly sods think they do, fact is they dont care about anybody, anyth

My ' WEALTHY '  friends have stated quite categorically they want to come for a HOLIDAY not buy the bloody country. The ridiculous amounts required are just that ridiculous and possible wearing of GPS bracelets also put them off. It is obvious they said Thais no longer want tourists and so be it they will go elsewhere, where Tourists are welcomed NOT vilified .

People often ask me what it is like to own and run a business in Thailand and what is the most important piece of advice to give them. That advice was given to me more than 15 years ago by a very influential Thai business man. It was simple, "never rely on the Gov't, they will not help you, we business people must find our own path to resolve the problems we face". His words are as true today as they were 15 years ago. My second piece of advice, read "Who Moved My Cheese".

For a looooong time tourism people want tourists but immigration not so much. The Thai government wants tourists' money but not tourists. Not hard to understand why they signal you to come with one hand and stop you from coming with the other. Dyspepsia. haha  Sorry I just like the word.

Prayut has said that opinion polls are allowed, but any criticism of him and his government is not allowed.

He is not aware that good policy benefits from input of different people affected. And that different people have different opinions and interests.

He only cares that the interests of him and his ruling junta are protected. He is a pre-enlightenment figure.

In this case the tourism sector is doing its best to come up with ideas that get the tourists back. And Prayut says no to all of them. That's why none of these ideas ever get anywhere. And it looks like the tourism sector is incompetent. The tourist sector still believe they live in a democracy where their ideas are worth something.

But they now live in a dictatorship where everyone is ignored.

No the exxpensive hotel in Phuket or Bangkok ar own by the elite royalist group.. they need to make money first.

This stupid government thinks that people are desperate to come back at any price.

Originally, thailand was apopular place becasue of the beach and fun places.. But what attracted  tourism is because it was cheap to make a nice 2 or 3 week vacation without costing a lot of money.

the governent has alienated the tourist and even the foreign business. their major foreign investors are the Japanese. and the German.  However, they are in lov with the chinese.

The people in the government wants to open th country and looking ways to scam the visitors for big money.

It will never happen..NOBODY WILL COME TO THAILAND NOW. airlines ar not even flying

If you ar lucky to get a visa to come to thailand it does not guaranty you entry into thailand.

The dumbest thing is to sell work permits to multi millionaires. What a genius move!! I am already a multimillionaire. Why would I work in Thailand? Government has no clue except dominate and control the population.

Every department coming up with their own senseless unworkable plan just to show that they are worth their monthly salary and how productive they are.???????? Everyday another plan however none of them works..

No plans ect ect ect will work until restrictions, regulations & travel costs are eased and that ain’t going to happen anywhere in the world until a working vaccine is available, so bunker down for a long time yet,end of story

The Left Hand not knowing what the Right Hand is doing is everyday practice in Thailand where every Government Dep't, be it National or Local thinks they are 'special' and 'clever' and know better than all others and besides, they are not interested in communicating with each other as it may mean 'Loss of Face' if anyone knows better or has a better plan than them.

This Guy has little hope of seeing a strong co-ordinated response from anyone as the Brainless of Bangkok look down on everyone and would not soil their shoes by visiting Ground Zero and talk to 'Serfs', who just may have a sensible idea or two of their own and make them look more Brainless than they already are !

What can one say? Desperation is setting in. Heads are going to roll. Just returned from Samui. Utter devastation. 90% of the businesses on the beach road were closed, and hundreds of hotels are closed and for sale, at half price. Trillions of baht are going to be lost here. Annually. Tourism will NEVER recover. Not in our lifetimes. Too much timidity. Too much cowardice. Too little juice and creativity. Such small minds.

The guy is right but the real problem is that no other country in the world forces people into expensive prison for two weeks for the right of coming to holiday in their country

Particularly a country with most of the better restaurants shut down. The obstacle course to tun before even considering coming would put off 90% in the first instance.

Tell you what, why don't you all just take a good bowel function ( As the gov and TAT seem to be full of it at the moment)  and just let back in the Goose that laid all the golden eggs for years and stop dreaming of robbing rich tourists....... Problem solved........ Oh, and while yer on....... Elect a civilian government of the people, for the people....... Not rocket science eh......  La la Land back to normal overnight.....

Clever leaders would have used the last 6 months to repair Phuket roads, footpaths, collect all trash on the island, dig down the ugly electric cables and get new electric or hybrid low emission busses to replace the tuk tuk maffias. They could have showed the world how much better Phuket is now to generate interests from tourists. They could have used the many thousands of people who got laid off to do this work instead of just giving them some small money for three months. But again the rulers are not very clever and only interested in getting huge commissions from weapon purchases.

I begin to think that the biggest questions is rather about how many tourists – apart from usual snowbirds, and stranded non-O visa-holders abroad – that wish to travel right now, than the question of reopening...????

Torphong said that the 8th October non-arrival debacle showed the hopelessness in the lack of coordination...

Fact is, and as far as the Thai authorities are concerned, the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. Heck, they don't even know how many fingers they have between them!

Correction: They don't even know what fingers are, or what they look like.

Enjoying the Quietness this virus has created. Nice , slow, easy life without the loud ,trampling ,damaging tourists.

There’s alot of expats  trying to get back in to enjoy the same very “guest of Kingdom” exploitation you seem to enjoy.  We can agree on keeping the backpackers away forcawhile

To each his own - I find pictures of the sterilized luxury tourist areas in Dubai totally off-putting.

>Saying the thai gov is being stupid wrt situation

No. They are behaving intelligently in accordance with the plan to bankrupt small businesses so that big businesses with savings enough to last thru this forced economic depression can take over the market. Governments have been correctly doing this periodically for thousands of years so I don't know why you or others tend to towards this ' government is stupid ' myth, other than you are <censored>

How is it possible that other countries simply reopened for tourists without "special visas", "special plans" or "special bubbles" ?
And they even get bookings and visitors !

If only a few hundred tourists can come to begin with, Thailand is trying to get only the wealthiest tourists. Other countries seem happy to welcome any who can afford to go.

It was never about the 150 Chinese tourists actually being on the island. It was about the fear and panic it would have created among the expected festival visitors. The government has done a fine job of painting all foreigners as dangerous, so if there had been 150 Chinese tourists on the island no visitors would have dared go there. Even if the tourists were properly quarantined.

Depends on whether you class some types of human beings as "vegetables'!

Everybody, including the Thai government and the TAT and the Ministry of Health shoud read this. It is hopefully available in Thai soon:

Yes, trillions of baht a year for decades and decades and govt fat cats milked it to the last drop without reinvestment and now the milk has dried up what is left is what you see , tired looking shabby run down resort towns.

The average Thai doesn't think that far.

Wasn't that. They had simply consulted some ads, they'd never reserved or bought anything.
