I thought it was a rule of nature in Thailand, when a ship is about to sink, the captain is the first to escape.

  • Well you gotta hand it to Prayut, at least he has a sense of humour.???????????? The comment made by him should have read...... I will not run away from problems i created.

  • Helping the poor? Steven, you do come out with some unbelievable rhetoric at times but even you must surely realise that helping the poor is not on Prayut's agenda!

I disagree ... I just finished reading an article on a welfare database to help the poor within Thailand, the government was providing free electricity, free travel, food and water deliveries by the army and many other numerous projects.

madmitch, you do come out with some unbelievable statements without doing your homework.

A Taksin Shinawatra provided them all with access to medical care for 30 baht. Prior to that access to medical care was finicially out or reach for quite large parts of the population. Does that make Taksin a saint? A saint removed by a coup perhaps?

As for your statements steve - Lets give em some context eh?

"Free electricity" - if consumption is not over 800 units ; 800 - 3000 units = 50% discount and over 3000 units = 20% discount. Currently this scheme has ended.

"Free travel"  - applies to 3rd class rail services only (currently ended) or using the welfare card which gives a maximum of 500 baht free travel per month after which the card holder must pay.

The army have been distributing food and water for decades - after every flood / drought / etc - it is one of their jobs.

The best possible outcome of these protests would be a new democratic constitution that would allow for prosecuting the usurpers for treason. Does it still carry death sentence around here? One can hope.

Whenever I see Prayuth on TV I am reminded of this song by Oysterhead.

Barber
Get this mirror cleaned
I'm troubled by the face I see before me
As we shave our nations face
Keep a steady hand
Listen to these words that soon will ring across the land
Wield the Spade
Ready the blade
Sacrifices must be made
There are many fools who dare propose imposing limits on my power
Those ungrateful who've been swayed by intellectuals in their ivory towers
They will pay for crimes that God and I will not allow
Some before the firing squad and some behind the plough
Wield the spade
Barber
Get this mirror cleaned
I'm troubled by the face I see before me
Be careful not to miss a whisker
Soon I face my people who adore me
As you shave our nations face
Keep a steady hand
Listen to these words that soon will ring across the land
Wield the spade
Ready the blade
Sacrifices must be made
Barber
You've done very well
Much cleaner now
The mirror's telling no lies
I know I'm not imagining the telltale glint of death I see in your eyes
I can't trust you
So I must do something with my knife
It's a shame to lose a damn good barber
But that's life
Wield the spade
Ready the blade
Sacrifices must be made

Quote

He said that the Thai government is watching over every social media users in Thailand and categorizing them for future investigations.

“You can read, post and share but do not believe in everything that you heard. You should have the knowledge, the immune system, to screen these information by yourselves,” he said.

The prime minister said the government must be like good parents and ensure that the children receive only good information online.

Good old indoctrination.

Prayut said that he will not resign as he is not allowed to resign. Prayut was put in this position by design and those who granted him permission to take power have to agree to allow him to relinquish the power. Which I am guessing they are not willing to do...yet.

Bingo

Promoting "democracy" as I recall him once saying??? Deny it so it can be protected. How dystopian can this person become?

"Prayut said that online campaigns against him, which have inspired tens of thousands of people to take to the streets in protest against the government, were being manufactured and manipulated by internet hackers."

I read this part of the Thai Enquirer article  and started to laugh uncontrollably.  I could only envision the many thousands of foreign digital nomads at the keyboards hacking away and creating the fake problems that the protestors are asking him to step down because of.  He has definitely lost his marbles, if he believes that the Fake Media is behind this uprising.  He is starting to sound like another leader of a foreign country.  Manufactured and manipulated, what hogwash.  Time to admit your out of your league General and time to ask for a free escape route. How does he sleep at night if he believes everyone is out to get him.

in 5 years he has already accumulated over 1.8 billion baht more than he had in 2014.  How much more does he need to extract.

Young people are part of Thailand but there are many many other voters out there.

I hope those young voters, and hopefully also some of the older voters, will establish their own party with honest politicians who want to work for all Thais and Thailand. Please not another billionaire.

Now they should establish their new party and show to the Thai people what they want and work out their plans. If they do it right then many, maybe even a majority, will vote for them in the next election.

That is exactly what happened at the last election (leaving aside your general caveat about billionaires).

They dissolved the party, and are bringing a series of spurious prosecutions against it's leaders!

Some time ago people voted for Thaksin - or his party.

And Thaksin was in charge for several years.

And I am pretty sure Thaksin could be still in charge if he would have worked for all Thais and Thailand instead of enriching himself. Many people got upset and finally there was the coup. And many people supported that coup.

If Thaksin would have worked for Thailand and not his own pocket then I don't think that coup would have happend. And just in case it would have happened the masses would not have supported the coup.

You either ignore or have missed  a fundamental point. Both the coups which ousted Thaksin and the one which ousted his sister were staged when it had become very clear that they (Thaksin and his sister) had either just won or were going to win a pending general election. That simple fact points irrefutably to another reality, one can only conclude that more people supported Thaksin and /or Yingluck than the coupmakers and the government which they installed.

What is more, for both Thaksin's and Yingluck's elections, it did not take several months to reconcile and review the votes, no major opposition party was banned shortly before the polls, and they did note rely on the payroll votes of a junta appointed senate, and a constitutional rewrite, to put them into power.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha categorically stated in Parliament on Tuesday that he will not resign or “run away from problems during a crisis”. He was responding to an opposition proposal that he should step down amid the student-led political protests.

He is the problem.

Well it's good to see that the Gen Khun Prayut Chan O Cha has made his point be known in that he will not be stepping aside, so all the farang who thought otherwise will need to go back and think of another excuse.

He has far too much support to even consider in the slightest to stepping down.  imo

Stop reading articles and see whats going on in the streets, people are suffering, going into debt and having possessions repossessed. Time Prayut stepped down.

Which part confuses you Steven, that one

“Power is confusing for us, perhaps even terrifying, because our relationship with it had an unfortunate beginning. Someone in a position of power over us used and abused us…It seems as if power were something to be wielded, always at someone’s expense, usually our own.”
