It is intriguing for some countries why Thailand has not got the praise it deserves for effectively containing the Covid-19 pandemic, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said in an interview.

 

He was speaking at Government House on Monday about the 34th Asean Summit via video conferencing, when he broached on the situation of Thailand in the eyes of the world.

 

He said that in some countries, like New Zealand, the leaders were praised for their administration during the pandemic and re-elected, making some wonder why Thailand has not gained more attention for its efforts.

 

“I told them we are not like the others. People in our country know the result and the benefits, and at this moment Thai people have different points of view. They see a usurpation [of power],” he said, in a veiled reference to the anti-government street protests.

 

The minister said that the summit would not be linked to Thai affairs, but foreigners want to know why the public wants the prime minister to resign.

 

Therefore, he had emphasised to them that the situation developing in Thailand was a usurpation of power, typical of Thai politics that he had always seen.

It might have something to do with testing less tha 1,000,000 people in a country of almost 70,000,000 and it seems most of the tests these days are on people returning to Thailand whereas most countries are testing their population .

Australia has only got just under 26,000,000 and have tested almost 10,000,000 .

The government and the Thai people have been excellent with regards to Covid. Anyone who believes otherwise is just jealous because of their own country's incompetence.

Thai people are not used to speak their minds on monarchy, government and officials in public. Students try do do now but get arrested. So when you are not allowed to critisize why on earth do you think you will get praise.

To answer this personally...I have been put off by endless policy changes that favor some nationals and not others in the name of containing Covid-19 in Thailand. I have been put off by disparaging remarks towards certain foreign groups by people in charge in Thailand in the name of defending Covid-19 policies here. I have blown time, energy, and money while attempting to actually come to Thailand when Thai bureaucratic incompetency resulted in these efforts being for naught. If Thailand can develop an equitable, transparent, and accountable policy for containing Covid-19 then I will gladly offer praise.

They already have the honour to be number 2 in the world with the most deaths in traffic....! So maybe we can praise them for that.

But if they start testing in whole of Thailand there will be more positive results. But these positives will probably be changed in "from abroad" because if the positive count goes up they will loose face. And we all know that will never happen.

Because at least one symptomatic patient would be turning up to hospital and testing positive. Mass testing of the population is worthless when no symtomatic patients are presenting to clinics or hospitals. Show me ONE country that does mass testing that has no covid cases. There are none.

Testing is completely overblown in measuring the spread of the pandemic. In the US, the hospitals are now overflowing with covid patients, the majority I suspect had never been tested before hospital admittance.

 

The proof in how the epidemic is spreading is not in testing, but in the number of new hospital cases of covid. As far as I know, there are no covid cases in the hospitals up here in Chiang Mai (unless they were identified in a repatriation quarantine situation, of which I've heard nothing). And, knowing Thais, they'll actively go to the hospital (30 baht) at the first sign of being sick, particularly with covid symptoms. Thus, I'm well assured my outings here in Chiang Mai, albeit with masks and social distancing, are not susceptible to covid infection.

 

So testing, or lack thereof, is worthless in painting the covid infection picture. And, sadly, since there can be a 30% false negative return with testing, then, testing to insure tourists are covid free is worthless. Sad for the future of the tourism economy returning....

 

No, the number of covid cases in Thai hospitals, not the numbers tested, is the key measuring Thailand's success in fighting the virus.

The "testing" rhetoric is dumb I think.

I believe Thailand got lucky on it.

There are over 50,000 people in the US currently in hospitals.  These are people who are showing sickness to the point they need care.

Thailand never had any high number of hospitalized people.  Lots of old people in this country who you think would have needed to be put in a hospital, never really happened.

I do believe the numbers are higher then reported but not to a huge degree.

Lucky or not glad I have been here during all this carnage.

Excellent in some areas perhaps and failing grades for speaking out. "Jealousy" takes many forms, particularly that of saving face to avoid admitting ignorance.

The WHO has praised Thailand repeatedly, just in the last few days!! 

 

Has he even so much as picked up a newspaper recently? 

 

With this kind of attitude he's certainly not going to make any new friends.

 

However, when you peel back the layers it becomes obvious that the WHO and other agencies are actually praising authoritarianism, which Thailand has showed off very well.

 

This probably explains why Cambodia and Laos haven't been praised, not even once, because despite their low case counts (which put together are still less than 10% of Thailand's total) they have done even less testing than Thailand and there are no mask mandates in place, other than to get on planes and a very limited number of other scenarios. 

 

Thailand has received praise due to it's totalitarian response at the borders, putting everyone who tests positive in hospital even if they don't have symptoms and don't want to go, widespread mask use (including mandates to enter certain types of indoor public places), track and trace, successful fear mongering campaign and constant, daily propaganda reminding citizens to be afraid.

The last place I'd want to go near if I were afraid of Covid is a hospital, for fear of contracting it there.

 

Aren't the Thais you speak of not afraid of contracting Covid in a hospital setting?
