Chinese spenders offer Phuket hope amid the wreckage of Thailand’s tourism industry

That is a very sad looking photo of Bangla Rd. If you showed it to any tourist they would definitely not want to go there. Old buildings, wires hanging down etc. It looks a mess !  Will never ever go there again.  It should be bulldozed.

Not every tourist wants a sanitised boring holiday. I come to get away from the mundane Spanish resorts. Removing the seedy bars and street food will alienate farang that want something different to what is on their doorstep.

Personally I think the days of a cheap fun filled holiday are long gone in Thailand. 20 years ago it was "amazing" but now there are better options. Soon it will be solely aimed at the Chinese market which should drive away any remaining farangs.

So maybe it's time to bulldoze Bangla Road and wipe away any other such seedy places, after all Thailand needs a few more high rise hotels and shopping malls. Just don't expect me to travel half way around the world to go shopping in the same shops as in my home town and then eat in McDonald's.

It's not only Thailand that is courting the Chinese, UK investment companies with property portfolios have been doing it for years. Makes perfect sense, a near neighbour with 1.5 billion population, why not...days of GI Joe on R&R are long gone...it's called progress.

All this time I thought it was called greed.  I stand corrected.

I can't see them getting away with it next round

Let the yellow peril take over like they did in Sihanouk ville and it will be the end of international tourism for Thailand.

Anutin thinks differently. Its the farang that stink 'cos they don't shower according to him.

He's right in some cases. Central Festival at 11 o'clock is somewhat fragrant.

Nope. Its my personal feeling. Big mouth but nothing to back it up.

As if I'd have access to the politburo. Ridiculous.

And one decade later.....it belongs to China?

And one more decade.....you are where surveillance cameras are aimed at you wherever you are, where military-armed checkpoints are located on every street corner, where everything you have on your phone is recorded by the authorities and where your ID card contains biometric data such as DNA, fingerprints, blood type and how mandatory you are to the authorities. ‎????
