Benz driver and wife in "miracle" escape as 22 wheel truck overturns in Korat

7pm.jpg

A car showroom owner and his wife were lucky to escape with minor injuries after their Mercedes Benz was crushed by a truck carrying gravel that overturned in Nakhon Ratchasima in north eastern Thailand.

Chokephitak, 44, and his wife were waiting at a red light near the entrance to the Suranaree University of Technology on Route 304 (Ratchasima to Pak Thong Chai road) around 4pm.

A 22 wheel truck trailer had a tire blowout and the driver seeking to avoid other vehicles at the red light swerved and overturned. The trailer became detached as the vehicle slammed into an entranceway structure marking the road to the university.

Trucker Thaweesak, 28, was unconscious with a broken left leg. His wife accompanying him suffered only superficial injuries.

Chokephitak - who owns a showroom in Chokechai district -  and his wife had minor head injuries and injuries from embedded broken glass.

All four were taken to hospital.

Sanook called it a miracle escape for the Benz driver and his wife.

Pho Klang police are investigating and handling compensation matters.

22 wheel truck trailer had a tire blowout

Maybe i am going blind, but looking at the photo, it appears all tyres are ok.

One blown tire caused all that?

"No blown tires on the truck that I can see.

And 181 is your lottery ticket number."

What about the front driver's side tire.   Possibility?

Well, there are also only half of the 22 wheels shown in the pictures.

Could it be that it is one of those not shown?

BS  Ive seen many of these  trucks   with the tyre  thru to the cords,  huge chunks  missing out of  them etc, friend in the Police  tells  me the lorry  companies  pay the Police to turn a  blind  eye for ANY infringements of laws

The other tyres were on the trailer which appears to have become detached - doubtfull a drawbar trailer would lift its tractor.

Those other wheels would be on the trailer that appears to have fled the scene of the accident. Not sure if a trailer tire blow-out would cause this but TiT.

Burst tyres seems to becoming the new excuse,2nd one in a few days.

It may be the case but how you ever looked at tyres of trucks on the roads? Most of the time they are completely worn down with no more treads: truck company owners should be forced to have the tires checked and changed regularly but....you know TIT: never gonna happen. Better let accidents happen.

A culture change is needed.

Enforcing laws is a start, but responsibility goes to the driver and owner of the truck to ensure it is in roadworthy condition.

Would it not be cheaper in the long run to pay to maintain vehicles than to continue to pay for the old bill to look the other way and pay compensation for every accident?

Tyre blow outs do happen though, even on well maintained vehicles.
