Hendrix with the seminal anti-war protest song, Machine Gun, off of the '70 Band Of Gypsys LP.

Hendrix's 12-minute performance of "Machine Gun" for the Band of Gypsys is often lauded as his greatest, and is considered a stunning display of guitar virtuosity.  Hendrix's long guitar solos and percussive riffs combine with controlled feedback to simulate the sounds of a battlefield, such as helicopters, dropping bombs, explosions, machine guns, and the screams and cries of those wounded or grieving.  Although a proper studio recording was never realized, several other live recordings exist.  Hendrix debuted "Machine Gun" in September '69 in a performance on The Dick Cavett Show.

At a performance in Berkeley, California, Hendrix introduced the song:

I'd like to dedicate this song to soldiers fighting in Berkeley—you know what soldiers I'm talking about—and oh yeah, the soldiers fighting in Vietnam too ... and dedicate [it] to other people that might be fighting wars too, but within themselves, not facing up to the realities.

Since it's the entire album some may want to listen to it in full.

Tim Buckley with Once I Was (A Soldier) recorded in '67.  The video is set to the '87 documentary, Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam.  It features letters written by U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines during the Vietnam War to their families and friends back home. Archive footage of the war and news coverage thereof, augment the first-person "narrative" by men and women who were in the war, some of whom did not survive it.

King Crimson with 21st Century Schizoid Man off of their '69 debut album In The Court Of The Crimson King.

The song makes reference to the Vietnam War with the lyrics "Politicians' funeral pyre/Innocence raped with napalm fire".  Before a live performance of the song on 14 December '69, heard on the live album Epitaph, Robert Fripp remarked that the song was dedicated to "an American political personality whom we all know and love dearly. His name is Spiro Agnew."

Thanks for reminding me to listen again to the great King Crimson band.

My favorite being Starless (12'30"), on the epic Red album...

The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter appearing on their '69 Let It Bleed LP.

And yet more YouTube indiscriminate censorship for this video also does not include any footage not seen elsewhere.  You can't hide the most gruesome aspects of our race from itself and expect it to go away.  Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.  If we aren't allowed to see it then we can all pretend it doesn't exist, so the thinking goes.  It teaches only to turn a blind eye.  Not the most noble of practices.

A tremendous song by Tim Buckley, Tippers. Many thanks for posting.

Don't worry about the few posters here for...

Happy Birthday to Gary Christian of the band, The Christians. I have to shamelessly name drop here, their chief songwriter and keyboard player, Henry Priestman, was a close friend of mine in our early years, namely at boarding school in north Yorkshire in the 60s. He wrote some memorable tunes, imo.

Brian Jones was born on this day. He was clap ( solly I have a lisp) at writing songs but his easy mastery of several instruments enhanced The Stones early music immeasurably. Nice slide Brian.

Leigh French, the hippie chick, is magnificent. Hilarious and beautiful, a lethal combination. Thank you for posting that TBTF.

Happy Birthday Roger. Apart from the wonderful music, I've loved some of your and Pete's interviews over the years. I remember when you said that Pete wanted to be you. He had written all these great songs but the focus was on you, the singer with the long locks who scored all the girls. He's never got over having a big nose.

It's easier on here than other places. Just copy the address in bar when playing a youtube video and then paste it into your post on here.

Born on this day-

The inimitable Rory Gallagher

Celtic blues, love how he takes it down and then builds it up again.

Lou Reed- magnificent guitar interplay here between Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter
